Belial's Mini Mopar (LC Lancer)

Post by Belial »

Hi All,

My misses used to have a 1980 Chrysler Lancer years ago and it was a fun little car to drive, we ended up selling it and I bought her an EF Fairmont Ghia.

Years later and still running around in Fords, I had the brain wave of getting another Lancer and doing it up like a Mopar!

The idea was to either source a 1977 Lancer (round head lights) and do it up like a 'cuda or another 1980 (square head lights) and do it up the the VH R/T.
Seeing as though I picked up a 1980 last week, it looks like the Mini Mopar is gonna be a Charger clone!!

Here is what I have:

...and what I want it to resemble:

I have already contacted my upholsterer to get the drivers seat repaired, also a member of my current club is an Airbrusher who does Harleys and will paint the decals on the car.

The car it's self is in pretty decent condition with the only rust issue being the the lower section of the hatch.

All up, it shouldn't be to hard to do.

Seeing as though I was able to turn this:

If this was "The Pig" (My XB)
The grille would have cracked on the way out and snapped on the way in.
The driving lights wouldn't have been in proportion
I would have lost 3 screws
The paint would have run and I would have done my back in.

Me likey this car already!!!

Last Thursday"
"Drove down to see my upholsterer, who did the Pig, my Pano and another XB that most never even knew I owned.
Quote to get the drivers seat repaired with new matched vinyl came in at less than what I spend on Beer each fortnight!!!"

Yesterday"
Upholsterer calls and say's he's got both types of vinyl I need, if I pull the seat out he will do it tomorrow.... and will be at my place soon to help...
Lit a smoke, ran out to pull the seat out, placed seat in the driveway, locked car and he arrived before I put smoke out.
Less than 5 mins to get a seat out and I never had to muck around with with my wife's old one!!
Me soo likey this car at the moment!!

Passenger seat, all original.

Driver seat all done:

Both side's of vinyl on base are new and so if the base side.

Pretty happy with the match of vinyl

The guy has been trying to sell it since last year and I have bookmarked it each time.
I made contact earlier in the year and made him an offer....

He knocked me back and after some more pushing, he finally sold it to me for far less than what he had it advertised for!

Had a crack at cutting back the paint on the roof.
I got the paint consistent with no sun bleached bit's.
Easy enough done but the guy who painted The Pig got back to me with a quote to do a closed door respray.....
Anyone wanna lend/give me some cash?

Next day:
Took Mini Mopar to a full on panel shop today (They did the work on my FPV) and asked if a proper cut and polish was feasible??
The kind man graciously pointed out to the faded bit's that I thought were Sun bleached patches and said "That's the primer, there's No paint there!"
First issue I've come across thus far!
Considering the bonnet will be painted Black and was factored into my original quote, no loss there.
Top's of guards, doors and rear quarters are a different matter.

I irony to doing it up like a Charger is that I always hated Chargers!!

I was a Chrysler Kid before I became a Ford Man...
I Had a heap of Chryslers/Valiants and never really though twice about getting a Charger!!

I know of a guy who bought a Mk II Cortina and built it to resemble a "genuine" GTHO PHase III

Very clever little car

I've personally always wanted to build a Gemini and build like the 1983/84 Malborough HDT cars (prior to the 'Day-Glo' specials)
The irony of that is that im not a Brocky fan , not a Gemini fan, not a commodore fan, and cant stand smoking lol

Went for a little spin in Mini Mopar this arvo, the boy in the back seat squawking most of the time (dis Nero's car!) and misses in the passenger seat.
Came back via hwy and was surprised how well it sat/stayed on the road.
I know it ain't gonna break any land speed records but it's still a fun little car to drive and if I wanna go fast I can either drive The Pig (XB) or my FPV.

I just went and caught up with a "Back-yard painter" surprised to find one as you just don't here of them anymore!!

He painted another mate's XB and done a decent job.
So after chewing the fat for a while, he gave me a price to repair the rust in the hatch, paint the whole car less bonnet and cowl panel the same Silver and paint the bonnet and cowl panel matte Black.

Happy with the quote and the finance minister didn't immediately tell me to F off!

Now to scrounge up some funds!!!

Now without bodyside moldings.
(If you are chasing some, check the "For Sale" section.....They are FREE)

The Lancer badge will stay for now until paint, then it will be relocated to end of HEMI 265 decal. Instead of a Charger badge!

Whilst you are binning things (or at least removing them)those mirrors (they look to Kmart auto parts to me) would be the first thing I'd get rid of.

Looks tidy, and yes interesting concept.
Personally, I've always wanted to do the vertical stripe on the bum of one off these.
Something like this.

No interest is doing it up as a Plymouth Arrow as it basically is one.
No fun there.

As for the side mirror, I'll be swapping it out to a pair of Chrysler ones.

Well that didn't go so well!

I spoke with my car club that I'm a member of for the XB and they are not sold on the whole Mini Mopar build.....

Anyone know of a car club that'll take Mini Mopar?

Sigma-Galant.com would like the idea I'm sure

What club is the XB in????

There are a few Mopar car clubs around in Vic, but again...I found them to be a little bit apprihensive on the idea of entering a car that isn't a Charger, Pacer, or AP5/6 (the car i had in mind was a GE Sigma wagon, so it was built by Chrysler in the 70's, running steel bumpers)....but I may've copped the bad egg or Hemi purist in the group...... ask the question to them and see what they say

One this is for sure.....you're definately welcomed here with your car.....chin up, you've got my support on your build!

The XB is with Full Metal Jacket Muscle Car Club.
They are an awesome bunch of guy's and I have no second thought's about them not letting Mini Mopar in.

I wouldn't even try a Chrysler Club but while sniffing around before work on Monday, I contacted a few different clubs and a few had already got back to me by mid-afternoon and all of those "Loved" the idea and are happy to accept Mini Mopar.

I haven't made up my mind who'll I'll go with just yet as I'm not a "Smash and Dash" guy but don't/can't attend meetings regularly due to work.
FMJ provide a few great runs per year and I don't even get to all of them.

I'm so lax on car shows, I didn't even go to AFD with either of my Ford's.
I went to Hanging Rock in the Pig with FMJ and it died on the way back...

As for the "Arrow" point, I'm not being negative in anyway. To me it'd be like doing up a Nissan Maxima as a Nissan Cerfiro.
Still better than putting a Chevy badge on a Commodore :P

Bloody "mint" car you picked up :D

Love your ideas !

With the mirrors - I used LX Torana/HX Kingwood ones on mine. Suits the square lines of the car much better than the "silly round standards ones" - which I note yours doesn't have :\
I presume that you won't be fitting the 265 6 pack engine. My car was penciled in for a 340 back in the early 90's ..... until marriage and houses got in the way :o
