Maybe Im missing something, but if you havent done anything to the engine then imho you should leave the exhaust standard.

I've found a good set of extractors and an exhaust is one of the best things to do first... Then a carb.. Good stuff in, bad stuff out.

My first ever galant was a bottom of the range yellow gc with drum brakes.

if I have one thing to say it's convert to disks. Drum is fine until you have to slam on the brakes. I did and ended up sideways in the middle of an intersection. Lucky the other guy had abs or I'd be dead.

A little update

Engine is in and purring (YAY)

Slight drama attaching the tranny then after 30 mins or so it just decided to pop in. :hit:

Also I picked up some trims, not a big fan of the original ones, will look good when i clean the wheels i think.
Note: the left front guard was missing paint and i used supercheap sky blue to spray it temporarily and its a dead match LOL

Does anyone know if gj sigma struts will bolt straight in to my gb? or will it require some modification?

The strut tops on the GJ are four bolt so straight up they are not going to bolt on. Go for the earlier GE Sigma or Scorpion struts - I'm not sure of ball joints and steering etc...

GE/H struts will bolt onto your steering knuckles but you will need to use your strut tops.

Or just bolt a set of Galant struts &/or disks onto it. You don't need to change struts to do a drum -> disc conversion.

Whereabouts are you ? I have a couple of spare sets of stock GA/GB Galant struts with disc brakes (discs will need replacing & calipers rebuilding though). You can have a set for nothing if you want to come pick them up. Oops - cancel that ! Just saw you are in Qld !

New GA/GB discs however are expensive ..... probably better off using GC/GD discs & calipers (which are also LA/LB/LC/GE) ... they bolt onto the stock galant strut and are way cheaper. (Note that you can't mix 'n' match the discs & calipers though)

You'll need to change you brake master cylinder as well if you go from Galant Drum to Galant Disc front brakes.
If you want any sigma-galant.com stickers, then look here for how to get them sigma-galant.com stickers

Absolutely Dave ...

Another thing that may or may not be an issue, is that the all-drum cars have slightly larger rear wheel cylinders than the disc-front cars ... so there may be a bit more rear bias on the brakes after the conversion ? Whether it was enough to be a problem would be a "wait & see" thing I guess.

(I'm actually planning to put a set of the larger wheel cylinders in my rally car, hoping to get some more rear brake bias for gravel use !)

hmmm, taking all of what you guys said into consideration, I think for now I will just get some new front brake shoes, rebuild the cylinder and wait til later days to do the conversion.

I have been told they don't make gb galant brake shoes anymore which I believe to be an ignorant response due to the specialist not having time to deal with anything that requires addressing.

I might get them rebonded if that is the case though.

Update - car was all ready for rego on sunday then the un-thinkable happened.

left the lights on over night and not sure exactly how but the coil burst into flames and cooked itself melting plastic all inside the engine bay.

Hooray!

We think it's just a dodgy coil?

so my brother thought he would be nice and pick up a rotor button and condenser as part of my birthday present. Nek minnut - $76 for rotor $13 for condenser.

Thats what happens when you don't do things yourself. You get ripped off and Karma blows up your coil

well now thats.... ummm.... different. just pick a Bosch GT40R coil up, just make sure you get the right one for your car, some have a ballast resistor and some dont need one. (not sure if Gb's had a ballast resitor or not)

Hope the rest goes smoothly from here

Yeah I picked up a gt40r coil and the dude asked me what car I had so i told him and he suggested one he had on the back shelf.

Assuming he knew what he was talking about I took his advice haha.

Bad decision I think.

I believe my car does not have a ballast resister. Although It does have what looks like a condenser swinging off the coil wiring to an earth. maybe I'll get a new one of those it looks pretty haggard.

Cheers jono
