1977 GD Galant racecar build. (on the cheap)
Car arrived in a sorry state but was still in good condition by the most part. It had spent 5 years un-used and out in the rain.
NA 4g63 6 bolt motor.
The inside was no prity sight!
And so the build began.

Insides looking the goods.
As is the outside.
So time to get the engine bay up to speed.
PLEASE NOTE.....DOING WIRING SUCKS KING KONG WANG!
Custom turbo setup needed to clear the steering box.
But as you can see ive got loads of room for all the pipe work now.
Pipe work time!

Cheers
Nick.

Old school Mitsu's, its not a hobby; it's a life style.
Re: 1977 GD Galant racecar build.
Best way to do it is get a second stock sway bar. Cut the ends off it and brace it to the standard unit in the car. The further along you join the cutoff ends the softer it will be.81GL wrote:Looks mad, definitely come a long way.

Eg. Run the second bar under the stock bar and join them together with two brackets. Then cut the round bolt holes off the end of the new bar. Then build two more brackets to join the lower bar to the top bar. Test the car out with the bracket in diff spots till your happy with it. Then you can cut of the excess and tack weld the bracket to the bottom bar to stop it moving. If you dont want to weld it you can use 2 hose clamps per side, one each side of the bracket to hold it in place.
PS The harder/stiffer you make the front sway bar the sharper and more sure footed the initial turn in will be but the more understeer you will get mid and exit of the corner. You will need to play around with it till you find a setup you like. Later on you may want to look at a rear sway bar or stiffer rear springs to dial out some of the understeer.
Hope this helps.

Re: 1977 GD Galant racecar build.
That's one trick looking gal.
I myself am at the moment considering an N/A 4G63 DOHC conversion for my galant, just to be a little different.
How exactly did you overcome the fact that the water pump exits the back of the motor. I can see some plumbing there but i'm just curious what exactly needs to be done.
I like your manifold setup too (mines a road car so i don't know how that'd go) besides that and the obvious things like mounts, what else needs to be done to get that engine into a galant?

Check out the Twin Cam Conversion section at http://www.austarion.com where someone is producing a right angle thermostat adapter for the back of the DOHC head.Tj. wrote:I myself am at the moment considering an N/A 4G63 DOHC conversion for my galant, just to be a little different.

Re: 1977 GD Galant racecar build.
I did see all the stuff at austarion. Plenty of info there.
Thanks for that link too jimmy. I've seen something similar on austarion too and i really dont want to massage the firewall. Wanna keep it straight and OEM ;)
I'm also interested in the idea of flipping the intake manifold upside down as opposed to cutting and shutting the TB. You've still gotta cut and reweld the flange but the up side is you get more clearance at the top of the motor.
Ultimately I'd like ITB's but my pockets aren't deep enough
Gotta find a donor car first.

Re: 1977 GD Galant racecar build.
Man thats an impressive galant for sure! How did it tune up? The custom plennum is an interesting addition. Why though? Was there no option already suited for the twin cam or were you looking to do something slightly different?

Good news is its back to car stuff right after i hit post so things are looking up.
Manifold was as much a fun thing to build as it will be useful ( i hope).
Not a clue what numbers it will pull but as i said, stay tuned coz its weeks away.

this car is very well done Jimmy
you've got a pretty similar set-up to what i want to do if i don't keep mine original
main thing that i'm unsure about is the gearbox to use. what gearbox have you got on there?
P.S. love the intake design and naked interior
damn good job man

Re: 1977 GD Galant racecar build.
jap 5 speeds are narrow and wide mate yess will fit with the saturn but its longer so will still need to get tailshaft shortenned i believe.. and the saturn will have fun holdin 100km/hr in 5th up a hill haha
you want a narrow one, way to tell is bottom 2 holes are about 310 apart, in a wide they about 330 mm i think

I'd love to hear if any more progress has been made with this car, I'm getting ever closer to fitting a 63 in mine.
Which uhh.... sheepishly brings me to my question. Do you still have the N/A extractors?? If so how well did they fit? I uhh... might know someone that may be interested in them.

Re: 1977 GD Galant racecar build.
Its had a basic tune of it runs. Still needs an air leak fixed, thermo fan fitted and the oil cooler and its sready to hit the dyno for it full tune.
Still got the extractors but you would need to make up a new plate to weld on the top as i cut it off and used it for the turbo manifold. If your still keen shoot me a PM and im sure we can work something out.

Re: 1977 GD Galant racecar build.
Been awhile since the last update. The car's running with a base tune but im far from happy with it at this point. Even as is it lights up the rear wheels like nothing else though.
Changes being made are:
- the old version 3 wolf ecu has been dumped in favor of a laptop frendly version 4
- fitting a TPS
- upgrading the fuel system (injector's + pump)
- fixing a manifold air leak
- changing to E85!!!!!!!!!!
- change screamer pipe angle away from clutch cable
- back down to melb for a re-tune
Cant wait to see how the E85 works out.
