hi all
hi all
hey hows it goin
got my first car about a year and a half ago its a 1986 GN sigma
it is fuel injected with K&N intake, exhaust done, lowered on king springs and
has a little bit of the interior done.
i am currently trying to save up so i can get it re-sprayed and all the dents out of it (wasn't me it was like that when i got it) but apprentice wages are givin me the shits especially being a first year.
i went on the last S.A. cruise only hours after finding this forum and ever since have been on every time im on the computer.
Hope to catch up with a few of you sometime u never know.

Looking forward to seeing some pics. I wouldn't worry about the dirtiness of your engine bay, it can't be worse than mine. I need to get out the paint scraper out when I have some free time.

Re: hi all
painting is not overly hard...
its the prep work that is the killer
your finish is only as good as whats underneath ;)
get a spray gun, a gallon of gmh black (cos its cheap and ya dont need thinners, you use it straight from the tin)
find an old panel, and go nuts
thats how i started off, cheap $99 gravity feed gun, some cheap as chips paint, and an old commy bonnet
welcome to the site too

Re: hi all
I use a suction feed Iwata W87 spray gun.(bought it in 1993, cost $400 then)
Good quality gear makes life a bit easier.
If you haven't sprayed a car before I recommend staying away from metallics and opting for a solid colour.
There is nothing special about how to put on that green, other then it's a metallic.
So you need to apply clear as well.
I use Acryllic Lacquers as I don't have access to a spray booth.
My car was sprayed on the driveway in front of my garage.
The hardest part as EVL076 said is the prep.
I've sprayed about 15 or so cars now, so I've got my method pretty much down.
I strip them back to bare metal to first see what I'm dealing with and then file finish.
You can fill dents but you cant fill humps.
One panel at a time and take your time.
If you try to take on too much at once you'll stuff it up.
I learned years ago to take them off the road and do it in one go.
Having to pull them apart and put them back together again sucks.
But not everyone has the luxury of having another car to drive whilst it's happening.

Re: hi all
Also for spray painting the car make sure you get a compressor which can flow enough for the spray gun. The best i found to suit the job at a decent price was the belt drive supercheap compressor but make sure you get it when it's on special. Prob cost about $500 but it will save so much hassle rather then waiting for an underpowered compressor to get up to pressure.
There are plenty of tips that people can give to get a nice finish but the prep is where all the work is. Finding the low spots on the surface can be found easily with some cheap fast drying darker colour spray can paint. Only spray a very fine mist onto the surface you are preping and sand the surface and sand away to show where the high and low spots are.
Nice to see you have a set of starion mags on the sigma too. I know it may not mean much to people but those mags from memory are a few kg's lighter then any of the sigma 14"s i've measured. Nice reducing unsprung weight.

For a compressor you need a 12cfm minimum. Also for spray painting the car make sure you get a compressor which can flow enough for the spray gun. That's 12 cubic feet per minute....
(can anybody help me out with a metric conversion?)
With air supply any lower, you run low on pressure halfway through large panels like bonnets and wagon roofs.

Re: hi all
Welcome Undies , wish I had of thought of that. That supersaloon you're talking about, I've been eyeballing that one myself, it's a bargain. If I was in SA I'd grab it. Pity the guy did a bit of a dodgy paint job though, he sprayed over the door handles, that's just slack. ;)
There's no replacement for cubic displacement.
Re: hi all
yea i noticed that he painted the door handles coz i drove past a supersaloon today
same colour and everything and noticed something different about the one on carsales.
i think that ill have to pass on this one though because i want to save about 5 grand or around abouts to spend on the sigma i have now.
**** what i will do to it ****
get a sprayjob
new tyres
clean up and maybe paint engine bay
fix interior and speaker pods ( keep falling off my doors )
***** long term ideas *****
turbo
airbrushed graphic ( from one of my mates after he finishes his course )
!!open for suggestions and opinions all will be taken onboard!!

Re: hi all
Alright well if i could get one the same colour as my siggy atm that'd be great
coz i don't know how long its going to take me to get it painted
and the fact that i found a GSR Sigma in a car yard today for $2,850
it has pepperpots a new head because he was driving it around a bit after he bought it from a grandma and it decided to go on him the only problems i can see with it is that it has a pretty deep scratch on the rear 1/4 pannel and the dash has a small split in it near the clock. apart from that a good deal i recon shit all km's time to talk to the old folks and see if they will let me have 2 cars
wish me luck
*********************************************************
Turns out that dad thinks i won't be able to afford it and that we don't have room which we do so i am going to be a pesky little son and keep persisting till maybe i get it then i would be surprised coz he never gives in easily.
