Hi!

Post by gareth12 »

Hey hey!

Long time reader first time poster

Been looking for a Sigma wagon for a while, my mate used to have one when we were at school, many fond memories....

Looking for a cheap daily driver for now, but im a modifier and v8 lover at heart, currently building a hot rod cobbled together from about a million cars

Ran some numbers on the Sigma 80-87 looks like it has a weight of 1195kg as a 2.6 auto, meaning the largest engine i could fit and legally register in NSW would be 5760cc with an LS1 being 5665 cc... Hmmmmmmm

Anyway got my eye on one at the moment, so hopefully will get that for a good price and start thinking about cheap brake upgrade options as my first step

Cheers

Welcome to the site mate!

Sound very.. Interesting :) there's a mob somewhere that does conversion kits for what you're thinking of doing. I don't know names, but someone on here does :)

Good luck,
Mick :)

Ah, the age old question, how to make it stop the easiest way for the least amount of coin. Well, there's plenty here who have tried plenty of ways.
Anyone care to suggest a cost effective easy solution to Gareth's problem?

Welcome to S-G.

Only last weekend I saw a blue and black Sigma turbo with a 5.7L fitted to it driving around streets of near where I live.

i dont think the ls1 is as bad an idea as it may sound, plus they are pretty light for an 8!

I have been trolling through brake upgrade threads, seems like there is tonnes of info on here about different brake upgrades, but none of it goes as far as a step by step with pics. Something which i might rectify if i do mine. I love doing the conversion stuff but i have stripped my rod project for paint (after having it pretty much registerable) and absolutely run out of enthusiasm for body prep... Build thread here for anyone interested http://www.aussiev8.com.au/conversions- ... assis.html .... and im in need of a daily driver so i figured i might play with a sigma... or slugma as we used to call them... :o

Brakewise I think i would like something that's a decent size given the plans for it. Sadly theres no NSX/commo conversion link live anymore that i can find. I want somethign that looks very unassuming so im thinking some chaser rims might be the least flashy option for a 5 stud pattern. Hence im leaning towards the modified commodore hub commodore disc if the offset works and a commodore caliper. Maybe a Borgy from a VL if its narrow enough with some 43mm offset chaser rims. Lots to work out there with track width increases and legality (will be engineered) but i figure having a sigma and a hand full of commo bits will be a good start.

The diff forces my hand a bit i think, Im not aware of any tough factory diffs with decent ratio and an LSD in 4 stud pattern, and if im going to spend money would rather spend it narrowing a borgy or something so i get the ratio, the lsd and the discs. Also gives me a 5 stud pattern so yeah, might aswell go 5 stud on the front.

If anyone has any suggestions happy to hear them

Would also be interested in any info RE ls1/sigma conversion kits.

Bloke just around my corner just sold an orange 302/351 powered sigma, i reckon its responsible for over half the black lines around my area... was a beast!

Sounds like you have lots to think about.
As for 4 stud diffs, I would be looking at a R31 Skyline. They are the correct pcd, disc brake and use the Borg Warner 78 diff so there are heaps of ratios as the centre will interchange with XE/F/AU Ford and VL/N/R/P/S Commodore as well as the Nissan LS centres.
The housing will need to be modded to suit the Sigma location arms but should not need to be shortened.
Another option is you can find a centre is the 10 bolt Scorpion diff, will bolt straight into your car but the only LS option is a EX Lancer centre.

Thanks for the heads up on the r31, i had a borgy LSD centre... why did i get rid of it! lol... They are about 1460 disc to disc a google search tells me, so 60mm odd wider then the sigma, could work with some 40 odd offset wheels?

what wheels that are relativaly available would i need to go over r31 brakes?

the r31 uses a combined hub disc right? so that would be out for the front im guessing. Spose i could get blanks of whatever and have them drilled. What else is big and 4 stud viable for the front in terms of hub/disc/caliper?

Hopper Stoppers do a 300mm kit for Sigmas
http://www.hoppers.com.au/complete%20le ... index.html

You would of course need to select your front and rear set up before selecting wheels. Out of interest and reading your were thinking of Commodore chasers, you know the R31 Skylines ran the exact same rim but in 15x6 et25ish 4x114.3

The rims on my hardtop below are stock Skyline chasers on the front and the rears have been widened to 15x8 et0

Already got a hoppers kit for my rod, not a bad kit, but to be honest i didn't think it was brilliant in its design, hut the upright, split washers way bigger than the bolt they were fixing too... and not easy on the wallet. But it sure is convenient so we will see...

I had no idea skylines ran the same rims! This is part of why i picked a sigma, i know mini's very well, escorts, a bit of commodore falcon and HQ stuff for conversions but had no sigma knowledge. Maybe i dont need to do the 5 stud after all

On a downside i called about the sigma i was chasing, fella has had it advertised a month on gumtree, i make a call and suddenly a few hundred is added to the listed price, then he texts me and offers it for less if i take it tomorrow, then he texts its no longer for sale :@
