1979 Chryser D50/L200

Post by bmx537 »

Hey guys, always used these forums for information so i thought i better join up!

Im up to my 2nd L200. Used to have a beat up ex paddock bomb with the 2.6, extractors, exhaust and lowered a bit. Loved this car! wish i never sold it!

Anyway, i came across the 1979 Chrysler D50, not sure how rare it is, but its one of 2 ive seen in all of Victoria so far! Same as a L200 as ive been able to tell so far!

Its got a 4 speed manual with the 2.0 astron.
Had only 64,xxx legitimate K's on the motor. It was used to tow around helicopters on a private airport in the middle of no where.
It had no real rust when i got it (has a bit in the tub now).
All ive done up to it so far is replace the clutch and service it.

For a while i wanted to make it look a bit 'old school' and that hot rod kind of look. But I've moved on since then and I've got some things in the works!
I picked up a 2.6 out of a scorpion for it, which is going to have no piece left untouched!

Anyway, heres some photos!

Ill find some more shots somewhere at some stage! It's sitting a lot lower not, but also defected and EPA'd.

Cheers!

Very nice ute mate, and welcome to the site.
Way back in the day my Brother had a yellow D-50 with the exact same stripe as yours, wonder if it was factory or dealer optioned?

Sweet! another ute- and that thing looks sick!!

Those whitewalls, hub cap spikes with the stripes, pure car porn.
Lookin at this makes me wish i still had my steel tray body :\

I had a d50, still have the badges and the grille but you have the American grille, and paint.
ours had 4 round headlights and a weird rectangle pattern grille
wish i still had it, being a '79 you could stick a 265 hemi with some serious mods rear support pannel and firewall,
get it engineered and maybe legal. that was my plan for my old one before it was ridden off.......

Not sure if the stripes were a factory option, mine was plain S31 beige
There is flics of a Dodge Arrow Pickup or sumthing with the same front end as yours,
Black with red orange and yellow stripes

1600 and column shift yeah? my shoulder hurts just thinking about it.

I have an MD, last of the line, SOHC 4G63, 5 speed jap box twin plate and LSD standard.
Pretty much a non turbo Starion setup

If yours has a terrible turning circle like mine had, try this if you havnt already:

Drivers side, full lock left

remove the little bolt from both sides and you'll get between half and 3/4 steering wheel turn
It wont feel like a pig, make that nasty noise on full lock and youll be able to ubolt in two lanes

** I havnt had any probs with this yet, i was looking at replacing the bolt with a rubber stopper but havnt needed to
Also not sure if this apply's to any other mitsubishi's
How can you not love the taste of blood and diff oil?

Just picked up what I think is a 79 D50 but I'm not 100% sure due to no badges and worn compliance plates. Just Wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of engine it come out with originally?
Also, what would need doing to fit a 225 slant, if anything? I know a 265 fits straight in.

I have a Sales Brochure for Australian Chrysler D50, if yours has 4 round headlights its called a Commercial model and standard engine is the 4632 1600cc, if it has 2 square headlights its a Recreational Model and it has 4g52 2litre Astron engine

Sounds like a good tip. No issue with the ball joints getting loaded up or anything? And why the hell would they put a 1.6 litre in a commercial ute - it's meant to be a work horse. You know, pull a load and helpful stuff like that? :hit: btw this is a cool looking ute bmx537. Hope you get the defects off it and actually enjoy it again soon

Bit of a thread bump here, but whats the towing/carrying capacity of one of these utes?
What rear end has it got? Same as a scorpion or does it have a BW diff like early sigmas?

The Operators manual in the glovebox list towing capacity with trailer brakes 1000kg, unbraked 600kg
The diff is not like any of the cars, the housing is bigger and the brake drums are huge. I was told Pajero centre would fit but have never done it.
