LC Lancer Hatch

Post by gaz914 »

Was looking around for a car for me to drive to work and my youngest daughter to learn to drive in.

Came across an LC Lancer that seemed like reasonable value, so we will see where it ends :)

Very nice and straight looking hatch. Certainly looks better white than it would have in that brown, lol.
Do you have any plans for it or just see what developes?

Take the front blinkers off, and swap them over (they're on the wrong sides).

Did you get all the chrome strips with it? It really needs the ones under the rear pop out windows.

It doesn't look to bad, but I'm not a fan of the spot lights cut into the grill.

Dave...

Initially it will just sort minor things to make it nicer to drive (ie suspension and A/C) and reliable.
Its got to stay 'P' plater legal, but I can see a 4G54 with EFI making its way in there... (H)

Blinkers noted 8o| , left headlight is a bit wonky as well.
Didn't get any chrome bits, I think I will paint the window frames black, like this.

True. The LH one you have is one of a LB hatch, the right one is the correct one for your LC.
I also noticed that your LH reversing lamp lens should be turned by 90°...

Nice ride lb4g63!

Looks good, but it needs a few things, EFI 2.6, big brakes, sport steering wheel and different wheels. I have 3 out of 4 in stock :)

One stop shop!!

I'll get the little things tidied up first before I embark on yet another project

Cheers Trev - I'm in the Penrith area.

75wagon has some chrome window strips he is willing to part with, so that is sorted.

The LH taillamp is cracked, so the correct one would be a bonus.

Small update
Just been tidying up some minor things.

Added a thermosat to the engine so it warmed up. That 'caused' a water usage issue, then the water pump started leaking badly - thought the 2 were related. New water pump fitted, still a water issue which was seemingly resolved by tightening the top radiator hose.

Added H4 headlamps plus relay on the headlamps so we can see at night (H)

New wheels fitted - had them 'in stock' from the Sigma. Needed a major clean up and new tyres.

Image

The wheels were needed to clear the new rear brakes...

Image

I have some Sigma struts to go in soon-ish and I need to change master cylinder to reduce the brake travel.

cheers

So my daughter has been driving this around.

The water usage issue was ongoing - could not find a leak, pressure tested it many times, hot cold, warm - nothing but the water went some where! :banh:

She rang me up the other day to say it 'stopped'...
I assumed it had overheated, so took water and went to have a look.

When I get there, engine has siezed solid - I presume it ran out of oil :$

I had a TR Magna in stock, so out came the engine.

Image

A couple of days later and we have lots of bits...

Image

Image

Image

Had to drill and tap some new holes in the timing cover I got from Supescan as the narrow block has a different sump. 8-)

Image

Off to the engine man to have a look and see what needs doing.

I've never seen an oil pump discolour like that - it must have suffered from epic overheating...

So the engine bits came back - pics are at work :$
.75 over pistons, check head (OK), linish crank, new bearings, new oil pump, chain & gears.
Since we are going EFI, alternator needs to be slightly bigger - so Magna guts go into a Sigma housing.

Image

Battery was in the way of the preferred spot for the air filter, so it moved to the RHS.
Of course the washer bottle had to move as well!

Image

Modified the original wiring sto suit the battery location and added the EFI stuff.

Image
Image

After looking at various options for a surge tank, I decided that an in-tank swirl pot and pump would be the neatest.
So tank out and get to work with the angle grinder.

Inside pics :)

Built a (not so pretty) swirl pot to go in the tank.

Image

It has trap-doors on all sides to allow fuel in, but not out.

Image

Made a bracket to hiold the swirl pot in the tank and to allow somewher to bolt the fuel pump to.

Image
Image

Made a flange to allow the cut piece to be refitted - and removeable to replace pump if required!

Image

Brazed the flange in, but need to tidy it up before I take pics :P

Hopefully this will be going next week...

Forgot to take pics of the top of the tank once I finished... :@
Suffice to say I was happy enough.
This is a pic of the wiring to the fuel pump.

Image

Bolted the engine in but had a "tight spot" at each revolution. Eventually figured it must be the clutch, so gearbox out :(
Turns out the clutch was fouling the bellhousing in one spot by < 0.5mm! Ground a bit off the clutch and all good.

The Sigma engine pipe I had fitted OK, just couldn't use the steering as the Pitman arm wanted to share the space with the pipe.
went to the local exhaust man and bought some pipe and bends. This is the result.
Where the pipes 'cross over' is where the steering is - which gives the clearance required.

Image

Added some flanges and pipes, plus a muffler and suddenly there was an exhaust system (H)

Image
Image
Image
Image

Heap of other little jobs done, now it looks like this.

Image

Started it up today, sounds OK. Runs really rich though.

Water pump leaks :banh: but that is easily fixed.
Need to sort an alternator adjusting bracket and that is it!

Cheers

Did think about it for a few minutes, but I don't have the time to do it - I'd want to take everything off, so not a 5 minute job.
