1971 LA Lancer Coupe Race Car

Well, a few years ago Dad bought a 1973 Galant and started racing, But then he wanted a lighter car. He picked up a rust-bucket LA Lancer and over 4 years of week-end work turned it into what's in the pics.(No build pic's as I only took the one's here today and it's on the hoist so taking pics was difficult (Pics were taken with a 5MB Phone).

It's got a 2.6L sigma engine, twin 48mm DCOE webers, (Also a custom made Fuel Injection set-up, going to be tested when it's 100% finished), 4:1 Extractors to a 2 1/4" side exhaust.

Engine has been run-in on a rolling road, but hasn't seen the track yet. Should be out late next year some time.

Great car and awesome work. I dont get making all that effort for little response, any turbo plans? Doesn't sound like you have gone out of your way for torque so I am thinking you are chasing revs?

No turbo plans as of yet, but it's being debated because (on paper) this car won't be as competitive as first thought

Dad did make a Custom throttle body and Fuel Injection set-up, Gunna run it in with the 48 DCOEs and then compare with the EFI.

Can't say atm, We havn't worked it all out yet. Probably won't be doing any work in the next couple months due to funds and other jobs, but I'll keep this thread going when theres more updates

Unfortunately, Some of it might be going, Someone had a bitch about it being unfair that people can make stuff and others can't, so a decent amount on the car is actually illegal as it stands.

I am interested in any information on this myself, and the entire rear suspension set up. Still searching for a good set up for my Galant

Your dad has done a nice job building his LA. Shame about some of the parts being illigal because he machined them up himself.
Do you know of many other LA's racing in SA. My mates dad's old LA circuit car that was built by Colt Speed, apparently went to SA when he sold it. It had a 4G54 turbo motor out of a wide body Starion.

Still not 100% sure what you mean because the fuel tank is rectangular, and there are bars both sides... But the on that appears "under" the fuel tank, is a rear anti-roll bar.

Was that old LA lancer blue? He remembers seeing a blue one out at the track one day, doesn't know any engine spec's tho.

No. It was white with red stripes like the EX works rally cars when owned by Colt Speed and I'm fairly sure my mates dad kept it that way (big26L might be able to clarrify). It could have been resprayed since though.

It was built by a mate of mine, prior to Peter owning it. It was NEVER owned by anyone at Coltspeed! but Ron did a bit of work on it when Peter had it.

It used to live in the same shed as my IPRA Lancer before Peter bought it. Import 2.6l starion motor and gearbox, commodore struts and brakes, commodore diff with a full floaters and spool, 15x8's, fuel cell, etc.....

Yes, it went to SA, but after that......... not sure. It is about 10 years since it left NSW

The car looks very nicely done, do you still have the mould for the flares I am after some bigger ones for my car as the flares I bought are struggling to cover the tyres.

Are you building it for IPRA? That would explain some of the illegal parts

Well after nearly 4 years of nothing, the car is finally coming down from the hoist.

I've started making the plug for the mould for the front bar, which will be made out of Carbon-Kevlar with ceramic inserts in the front lip for rigidity. Plans for a Velo Apex seat to go in are being tested this weekend and I've been given the all clear from the old boy to drive the thing this year.

It will be making an appearance at our local SA Japanese car show "All Japan Day" in Glenelg on March 9th, so if you're around come say hey!

I bought a Skyline to kind of keep my "going fast" bug in check and got a little bit carried away and Dad had alot of work going on and then before we knew it, 4 years had passed haha.

But it's coming down from the hoist on Sunday to test fit the front bar properly (need to remove some of the inner plates now the bog has set so it sits against the car nice) and also to test fit the new seat.

If you do, I'll be around the car most of the day, besides the mandatory walk around to look at all the other great cars that always turn out. PM me if you'd like to catch up and have a chat. I'll give you my number so we can tee up during the day.

Jeez, WTF is wrong with some of these people? Are they whinging that a backyarder is doing everything in house - or do they want to whinge about the big guys throwing money at their cars by getting all their work done via outsourcing... it reminds me of when Holden was dominating Supercars and Ford went off and cried foul and demanded the Holden race cars be knobbled to give them a chance. It's called COMPETITION for a reason

Geezer....no matter what class of racing it is.....no-one is willing to let another car to get ahead of the field.....its even worse when the car is achieving success is built and run on a far smaller budget than the 'big' teams.....Look at F1

Those replies were written 4 years ago and to be honest, I'm unsure on the technical aspects now, and also unsure if the rules have been changed. We will definitely be looking into it before we start getting serious with the car, but there's no point worrying about it now. We just want to get the car out on the track and start making steps in the right direction. So, for now, it's all systems go to get the car ready! Juggling it between work, uni, gym and homework is going to be challenging, but where there's a will, there's a way.

So.. Where do I start?

We checked the fuel tank, put some clean 100 in, tried to start it, found out the fuel pump was fucked. So we replaced the fuel pump. Then we hooked up the oil compressor tank thingy (doesn't have a name cause dad made it) to the block to give it some oil pressure and it split a hose (only running at 20 PSI). So, we replaced the hose and got our oil pressure. Try to start it again and it cranks, but won't fire. So we check the carbies are getting fuel. They are. Crank it again. No fire. Check the plugs, fine, but dry as a desert. Pull the top hat off the carbies and find that the needle is stuck in the seat on both carbs. So we ripped them off and cleaned them up, put them back in and tried to start it again. By this time, the battery was too tired and wouldn't take charge, so we ripped the battery out my skyline which has been sitting for 4 months and tried that. The car backfired through the carbs once, then vaguely started before stalling immediately, then backfired again, then we started dropping volts cause my battery was also tired. So now we've hooked my battery up to charge over-night and we shall try again tomorrow!

In positive news, I gave it a clean!
