Welcome, and GREAT Galant!!
You should be proud of ALF's original condition

If the exhaust isnt leaking or rusted, keep it.
It makes it look like the Sundays Bowls car, which is way cool!
But if you really wanted to change it, maybe start with a 2" system from the engine bay fire wall back.

Save your money and pay attention to the Suspension and brakes :)
Check the Galant section, Builds, and Suspension sections and you will see loads of upgrades that you can do
and usually not too expensive

Look after Alf, he/she is a beauty

Cheers Dan

Yes, dad said something about a 2"... :-)

Yep, suspension needs work.. as do brakes
Alrighty, shall check it out later :D

Oh, and Alf is a "shim" ;-)
Why ARE cars always "she", anyway? o.o
I'll admit right here and now that I prefer to think I'm drooling over a fella, rather than another female... <.<
But I'll stick with "shim". :-)
It's like male and female at same time... but neither, too. Like God. XD

Haha.. just chatting to a mate about "Him", "She", "Shim" & Cars right now, and his definition is thus: "Shim"; being a supreme being of awesomeness which is neither male nor female but walks among both worlds as it pleases. ^_^

A few thoughts on brakes & other things :

- The stock brakes on a GB are perfectly adequate for normal use provided they are in good condition. In fact there are a number of people (including myself) rallying Galants in Historic spec, which requires stock brakes.

There is no real value in changing to GC/GD brakes (the discs are actually smaller diameter, although the pads are slightly larger, and you will have to change the master cylinder as well as install a booster... the MC & calipers are designed to work as a package. Boosted brakes won't give any better braking - they just reduce the pedal pressure required).

I would suggest that initially you :
- replace the rear wheel cylinders. (If yours are original, they will be well past their best even if not leaking).
- get your front calipers rebuilt (new seals etc)
- replace the rubber brake lines with new ones. (Again, if they are original they will have gone soft &/or cracked).
- get the brake system flushed & replace with new fluid
- put good pads & linings on it.
- maybe get the master cylinder overhauled ?

You will be amazed how much the braking will be improved, for not much money.

As far as suspension goes, there is no advantage putting GC/GD struts in it .... or stock Sigma for that matter. Rather, just put some decent shocks under it. KYB "Excel-G" gas are fine for road use (#365004 for front strut inserts, #343060 for rear shocks), and only cost around $100 a corner. Don't waste your money on Monroe, Pedders or similar. The handling of the GB really responds well to accurate wheel alignment, too.

If the engine is stock, a 2" exhaust system is possibly overkill ? 1.75" would potentially make a worthwhile improvement in engine breathing though. (Mine runs a 2" system, but it has had some minor headwork to improve flow). For a cheap performance upgrade, bolt on a 32/36 DFV Weber downdraught carb rather than the stockMikuni - it makes a massive difference.

Great looking car you have there ... and the "jellybean" mags look perfect on it.

The Organ Donor.

Found him at a farm auction! Didn't pay much for him, either! Had been used as a farm-vehicle/paddock basher.

Took the centre piece of the dash out for my car for CD player (so didn't have to harm my original dash - this one was already in less than perfect condition, so didn't feel so bad about cutting a hole out of it).
Also got my black carpet from this car.
And motor and manual g.box.

Going to use "Galant" badge off boot to replace my current, rather faded one. Unfortunately didn't have "VALIANT" badge =/

Haha, I'm rather fond of the skinny steering wheel in the Galant, actually ^_^ Although, I wouldn't mind a cover for it.. but haven't come across any that are slender enough. =]
And I'm pretty sure that dad wants to keep the steering wheel in "White", anyway. (from http://www.sigma-galant.com/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=4362)

Tried to get photos under bonnet... didn't come out too well, sorry.. =/
Camera batteries died (didn't think they'd last long - only old ones I found that were almost flat anyways)... will get better pics when I get new batteries =]

As I've said - nothing special going on under there... all pretty basic standard stuff as far as I know. =]

Welcome, Alf is a awesome example... not many good original galants ( or lancers for that matter ) getting around in Tassie anymore.
Good to see females taking pride their cars for a change: ill i ever get with most women drivers i know is "oh yeah, that little red light on the dash has been on for a weeks i think" after i cant find the oil on the dip stick of my girlfriends car and not filling the car to window level with shoes, rubbish and clothes like my sister!
I used to have a apprentice hairdresser park next to me at tafe, she had one of the neatest Mk 2 escorts id ever seen in my life with a sticker that said " Classic not Plastic"
What end of the state are you located?

I'm in the North-East of Tas.

Haha! Oh, I SO want that sticker!! *starts searching on eBay*

Mmm, my car gets a fair bit of rubbish on the floor sometimes, but it always gets cleaned out at the end of the day. Hate having stuff all over the floor of my car. The most clothes my car ever has in it is a coat and scarf during winter, just in case ^_^ But even then, they are usually folded neatly on the passenger/back seat. No; I'm not a neat freak.. just when it comes to my car. =]
I usually wash and vacuum my car once a fortnight...

Heck - checking the oil and water were two things I had to learn before I was even allowed to attempt driving a car! I still check it every time I'm going to drive... it's just habbit I suppose.
I also begged my dad to show me how to change a flat tyre... I know I'll most likely need to do it some day!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I'm no expert (far from it, in fact !)

I'm just lucky enough to know people who have been rallying these things for decades - and I ask lots of questions & listen a lot. I reckon it's easy to get carried away & spend money modifying things for no real advantage ... remember that the engineers who design cars generally know their stuff !

Ahh but years of actual experience mean alot.

and suggesting practical repairs and upgrades is better than unecessary expensive overkill.
If the car is going to remain as close to stock as possible, it is not needed to put Coil overs, Massive brakes,
and a 3" exhaust on it...

Oh and i agree with ROB020, ill stick with the Girl thanks LOL

Extremely shitty news. It's so frustrating and saddening to see senseless destruction like this.
I hope the little turd-burglar(s) that did this are caught and nailed upside down by their scrotums / other associated genitalia.

Best of luck with the search.
