I'm not to worried about a little bit of surface rust, I just give it a quick rub to get it off when it's time to spray. While it's parked in the shed I put sheets over the top of it, that almost completely stops the surface rust in the first place. Obviously my garage is a warm dry place, so just putting sheets on it is fine. Obviously that method wouldn't work if it was outside or under a carport.

But yes, as Chris said:
C_Fernance wrote:The best thing to do is get a coat of paint on it ASAP.
It just about has all the panels ready for spraying now, just got a few jobs left to do on it now before I can start spraying.

Yeah, it's getting close now, looking forward to getting into the good bit, actually putting paint on.

I've spent the day doing little jobs, pics wont do them justice, so no point really.
I was planning to get to the Auto paint shop, but didn't get there? Ran out of time, looks like tomorrow

It's so damn close to spray time now, I can almost smell it

Good workmanship Dave. Nice to see other people doing things properly to older cars, makes them look that bit better in the end.

Well, the way I see it is, I am not interested in doing a quick spray on a car (I'll leave that for someone else to do).
I do the same job I would do on my own car (and this is exactly the same job my wagon got), you know, the type of job you want, but not the type you want to pay for

Thanks for the praise astronturbo77, I'll take it, and from you I respect it.

Garage is vacuumed out (good old Hoover upright vacuum cleaners  ).

I am getting the paint delivered tomorrow, so I spent the day getting things ready. Things like soaking all the door hinges, to remove all the dirt and grease, and soaking the bolts in thinners to remove the paint so that if they look like new when painted.
I've run out of masking tape, which is why I haven't finished masking up, but that is getting delivered with the paint.

I've found over the years that bare metal panels rust mostly on surfaces where dust can land. So by putting sheets on top of it, you stop the dust from settling, and actually stop the rust from forming (obviously, this wouldn't work over long periods of time, but in the short term it seems to work quite well).

Looking great.... won't be long and mine will be having the same treatment!!

Will have to try the sheets for mine inbetween sanding but fish oil has been good to me for the longer periods around the edges of the floor pan while waiting for the rest of the welding to commence next week before sound deadening the gaps.

looks great dave. was just curious as to how you kept the surface rust off the car. what i was doing was sprying a thin coat of paint or primer onto the bonnet and waking up and sanding. massive pain but i didnt know any better

We were all there once.

Latest Update.
Last night I applied a bit of blade putty. I've rubbed it back this morning and given it 2 more coats of primer. It's now out in the carport because I need more room to work on the body panels in the garage. Painting a car in pieces the way I'm doing it takes up quite a bit of room.

Looking great Dave. What sort of paint are you using and what colour?
I know white, but is it straight white or 1987 intergalactic reflection white or some such thing?

Acrylic Lacquer, and the factory white 4301 Alpine White.

I haven't uploaded pics as yet, but the body has been edged up in colour, and I'm just laying on the final coats of primer to the the bolt on panels.

I've done a few of these before, so I was confident it would come out well. Thanks for the praise though, I will take it.
And you are correct, the difference between a good looking acrylic job and a bad one is the amount of time you have to spend sanding it. If it's a bad one, you just want to hope you've put enough paint on there to start

BTW, for those that don't know. The reason I have put up so many pics, of how I have been doing it, and how it has progressed, is for a few reasons.
1. I didn't take very many of my wagon when it was done. So when I joined the forum (after I had finished it) I didn't have much to show for the work put in.
2. I got asked a million times how I go about it, and what steps to take.
3. This car (I'm hoping) is the inspiration members need to get off there arses and get there cars done and out there and cruising.

Disclaimer: I am not a professional car painter, and will never claim to be, however, I have sprayed at least 20 cars in my history, and the methods I use seem to work pretty well for me. They are time consuming, and completely unprofitable. But the end result is one very tidy car. I respect 77galantv6 and share his vision for what he wants to do with his car. Therefore, I got involved and made sure the car got the job that it deserved. I will not just paint a car for just anyone, and money does not motivate me. Life is way to important to spend all of it in my shed working on cars.

after spending friday night and saturday doing little things with the car then
to come and see it on sunday was awesome. couldn't get the smile off my face!

like dave said, hopefully once everything is put back together,
with all the new stuff - Bride seats, Nardi steering wheel, NOS tail-light garnish,
NOS indicator surrounds, and a few other things -
I'm hoping this gets the "Galant" name out there and people start looking at them
just that little bit differently

Also organised to get the front and rear bumpers re-chromed so that
nearly everything is completely new, immaculate and fresh
