GD rat

Post by coupe72001 »

Hi all,
I just won a very cheap, very ratty GD Galant on eBay. I am going to try get it registered and legal, but keep the rat look.
I am definitely going to need a front driver's seat though for RWC though, can anyone point me in the right direction, preferably in Vic.
Cheers!

Hi coupe72001, welcome to S-G. Good to see someone save yet another Galant from the crusher. Best way to sort out your seat dilemma is create a post in the 'wanted' section http://www.sigma-galant.com/viewforum.php?f=59 or have a look through the 'for sale' section http://www.sigma-galant.com/viewforum.php?f=36. As with all noobs, it is a rite of passage that you make a thread and post pics! Good luck with getting it through RWC.

:o Whoa, now that is a rat! It does however look pretty straight and free of rust. You are a brave man - if I drove something like that, the cops would be doing continuous laps of my block waiting for me to leave the driveway

Hell yes!!! Paint a huge rising sun flag on the roof, and gloss the lot :D (not telling you what to do :) just an excited suggestion :P )

Yep, she's a bit weathered.
The joke is she IS very straight (aside from the bumpers), there's almost no rust, and she's mechanically sound. I don't think it'll even make for a particularly challenging RWC.
It'll be interesting to see how much attention it gets from the PO-PO considering she'll stay (more-or-less) stock.
In case you missed my classified, Im hunting for a front (bumper mounted) indicator, I scored an amazing set of seats.

Tons of cleaning today. Then:

Got those front seats in. They were originally blue, so I sprayed them. Almost wish I didn't now...

MIGed up a small rust hole in the rear quarter.

Anyone know if I can slightly increase wheel/tyre size will without scrubbing?
There's a lot of 195/65/R14 wheels about for sale - is that going to be too tall/wide?

Too tall I would say yes. The tyre itself won't be too wide but it will of course depend on the offset of the rims as to whether they fit under your car or not.

Check this link for the car calculator.
You can input your current tyre and rim sizes and match them up against other size tyres or rims you want to use.
Will help you measure for fit before purchase
Also a great tool for checking rolling diameter to ensure your speedo is accurate after changing wheels (H)

Man this thing has a lot of potential. That's real patina too.

As for police attention, as long as there's no dramatic rust and no other defects (like lights not working or body work hanging off) there's nothing that makes it un-roadworthy.

Any mechanical plans for it?

I'd be tempted to wax it (it'll remove the oxidisation on the paint ) but will also seal the surface rust and prevent it from getting worse.

Waxing is a great idea - cheers.
Although tempting, Ill probably leave it stock-as-a-rock, at least until the roadworthy prerequisites are long gone.
I'm imagining that although I might get pulled over now and then, if the car is sound mechanically/structurally there is no grounds for a defect. If it is low and loud, Ill be asking for the same fate as my defected C210 skyline (which happened to be extremely tidy - just too low and far too loud.)
In the short term I do have my eye on a nice set of Cosmic style 13's. Following that I might also very slightly lower. I know they don't have a great rep. but King Spring low are cheap and typically only shave around 3cm off the ride height.
The only part I'm still chasing that is not off-the-shelf is a (bumper) indicator lens at this point. Anyone?

The part number you're after is KDRL-83 mate :)

They're king spring lows (30mm lower than stock). I have them in my gb and they're good :)

Just jump on eBay and search the part number... Pretty sure Nissan exa stock ones are the same. But cheaper :)

Now with Cosmic 13's.
Well knock-off Cosmic 13's anyway.

I certainly don't mind the rat look that's for sure, just got to pull it off well is all. I would be saying to get it as low as possible with some fat 8" wide wheels or wider and it would look certainly unique. Amazing how a set of wheels and the stance of a vehicle can really make it stand out/look unique.

My rat, who I now know affectionately know as 'Mugly' is up for sale on eBay.
I have massively enjoyed my time with Mugly, but have my teeth sunk into a 60's Mazda ute project and sadly don't have the space for two projects.

I'd be lying if I said that not an almost exact match for the green sprayed on A6m zeroes during ww2, it'd look awesome mocked up to match.. few rising suns here and there. Some exposed rivets etc.
