JV's Yellow GH Scorp

Post by jvflash »

A while ago I bought this Yellow GH Scorpion from gkskidma94 on this site.
Since then I have had no time to work on it.
I haven't, until today, even created a thread for it.

The weekend I picked it up I had a quick look over it, replaced front pads, brake fluid, oil, filters (fuel, oil, air).

It needs mufflers, steering wheel, power steering (OMG it is so heavy) and the obvious paint and panel repairs!

Now with the daughter's project car more or less finished I have moved this Scorpion into the carport where her project car had been parked.

I am so looking forward to getting one of my Scorpions back on the road, and this Scorpion has more street appeal than the GK.

For anyone wondering, it is to remain original spec, apart from the addition of power steering.

btw....if you look up Nissan R33 Skyline side indicators...you can get them in clear....they are flush fitting and the same size (and shape) as the original unit on the scorpions....you should have a look....see if they suit your car

Yes, steering wheel stays. The single spoke wheel is kind of cool
As this car is completely unmolested I would suggest that the MMC badge is the genuine original article where it is. After all the only Sigma designed by MMC was the Scorpion.
Good to know about the indicators, might buy a pair as spares, but for now this is an original restoration.

Pretty sure they had a Chrysler badge that fit in the hole. I have never seen that badge before.

Well there you go Jase, you just learnt something :P

Unless you are going to tell me that on a car with no other modifications whatsoever someone decided to remove a Chrysler badge (of which this car still has several) to insert another badge of different smaller dimensions, and do it in such a way that there is no evidence of the previous badge?

My thoughts are the Chrysler badges are inserted by people who have removed this badge because it reads Mitsubishi, and the owners want to believe it is a Chrysler, which as fate would have it is a larger badge. Like the idiots who list them on eBay as being produced at Tonsley... :ban:

There was a GH Scorpion listed on eBay just recently with a script Scorpion badge in the same position, again larger than this Mitsubishi badge.

You might be right and I am always open to learning but I have some issues.
They were only called a Sigma Scorpion here in Australia every where else in the world they were called Colt Sapporo, Eterna Λ (Lambda), Challenger and Galant Λ (Lambda)
If this badge was fitted in Australia it would have said Chrysler or at least MMAL not MMC.
I think this badge has been retro fitted from a Japanese Sigma Galant E

As I said, happy to be proven wrong and learn something new. Anyone got a factory GH Scorpion brochure?

Mine has a stupid Ralliart badge stuck over the indentation in the dash, lol

The brochure does not have a picture of the left hand side of the dashboard, only the drivers side.
I do not agree with your reasoning about MMAL or Chrysler. The Scorpion was built for Chrysler by MMC.
It makes perfect sense to read this way, especially seeing the Australian brochure proudly claims the Scorpion to be a fully imported luxury sports car.
I will have a look for a parts manual / fiche next time I am in Newcastle. That will list what was fitted.
Until then I'm right :P

My brother's Scorp had the same badge in the dash. Definitely sold like this in the Australian market. His also had the same interior and colour configuration - and the single spoke steering wheel (which I absolutely loathe).

Well this has become more of an educational post than I had imagined.... 8-)

100% built in Japan, not local product.

The GH Scorpion Brochure I have also states "Mitsubishi Designed" in the body of the text.
The rear cover states "Built by Mitsubishi, Sold By Chrysler Dealers".
No mention of MMAL at all.

And, oh, LOL again on the single spoke wheel. It's staying

Hey if you like the wheel, keep it and use it...it won't bother me LOL

What I mentioned about the wheel is purely a personal opinion...nothing more
(I think the ugliest wheel actually belongs to the Ford Fairlane of the mid-late 80's...single spoke wheel that's angled to the side)

Today I went to swap the rear muffler over with the spare off the red GK I once had.
Only the exhaust on the GH has been modified and welded together right up to the down pipe! Luckily I have some extractors and also another down pipe.
Rear muffler and middle muffler now different configuration to original as well.
So now will be replacing whole exhaust

Rear axle seals L&R
Fit power steering
Replace complete exhaust
Service transmission
Head gasket - maybe?
Replace windscreen

Paint & panel - probably be using Heath Street Crash at Lonsdale for this.

I have been using John at Heath Street Crash for paint and panel for over 15 years. Currently he is repairing my daughter's car.
My Dad has even taken his cars (such as his Rolls Royce) to Heath Street Crash.

My broken rib and torn muscle are starting to heal, so the Mrs allowed me some "automotive physiotherapy" to assist with the recovery process.

Now I can get started on my list of items to do...

All the scorpions have all had the sigma badge the same as the one in your picture, they were all from ge and gh. I too am enviouse of that dash haha, mine is undergoing surgery to fix all the cracks, as a result ill end up removing the badge hole and all the stitching lines but unfortunately thats the way its gotta be.......

If you didnt know the axle seals on the scorpions are changeable without having to get a bearing kit in order to press off the bearing to get at the seal, the seal runs before the lock ring so all you need is the seal, unlike most other diffs :) ( if you didnt know ;) )

Axle out now, get the new bearing pressed on Friday.

Also the oil appears to be seeping through the bearing seals, as well as the outer seal. Lots of build up of oil and muck in the middle of axle behind the bearing.
