My Jap A72 Mitsubishi Lancer

Post by Paul4carz »

I said I would put this up in members cars.
I bought this 1977 lancer at auction in Japan. It was like love at first sight. When I seen it I had to have it.
So I put a high bid on it and I won it!
I bought the car without knowing the spec, but from the 3 pictures I bought it from it looked like it had lots of spec.
These are the 3 pictures I bought it from

2 weeks later I received these pictures of it in Japan as it was going to customs before it went on the ship.
The pics aren't great but you can see a lot of spec

I then went and bought a set of SSR longchamps for it , and I sprayed the inserts gold and polished them up. This is what one looks like now

Thanks Lads :)
Yeah I Cannot wait till i get it.
Wont have it untill September so a long wait :(
My plans are to have it lower on dished wheels, not sure if i am using the longchamps yet. Not sure if it has an LSD but if it hasn't i will be getting one. Hopefully you all on this site can help me out there. And as for the Engine i was thinking about 4G63 turbo from a evo 1-2-3 but would be very hard to do due to hard to get all the parts i need like sigma gear box aswell as early l200 box etc etc , as mitsubishi never arrived to Ireland untill 1984 and are very rare up untill early 90's. Oh and i will be getting Japanese look number plates aswell and a overall good clean up,like getting engine bay sprayed for example.
Oh and i am in Ireland and It will be the only one in Ireland when i get it.
If anybody has any opinions or comments make sure you tell me,would love to hear any other ideas etc that people have.

Looks like your work will be cut out for you in regards to sourcing parts for your build Paul (I would've been surprised if there was an old school JDM following where you live). Your Lancer is a real rolling time capsule - by the looks of it the original owner poured a lot into it during the early to mid 90's. You are right about the Evo 1-3 engines becoming hard to find but at least with Mitsubishis you have a good spread of options to work with.

Thanks :) yeah there is lots of sites around but none like this one. It will be a slow project but will keep it this updated. Any other engine upgrades that would be easier done or is there much that i can do with the standard 1.4 engine for now?
And also does anyone know where exactly i would an LSD if it doesn't have one?!

Without knowing the provenance on this car, my suggestion would be "Don't change anything".
Once you find out what its history is, you'll be in abetter position to decide what to do.
Nice find btw :-)

The 1.4 is not going to yield any decent improvements in performance without spending lots of cash. I'd look for something that is a more common engine that would be a straight forward install. Most of the earlier FWD engines are a no brainer to swap into a RWD car. Also you can look at something out of a Mitsubishi van such as the L300 Express. They came with everything from a 1.8 (G62B) in the first generation L300's right up to the current 4G64 16 valve 2.4 litre injected engine. All depends on what you want out of the Lancer and what kind of resources you have on hand.

Yeah I know what you mean lads. Once i see what it is like when i get it will determine on what exactly i do with it. I am defiantly lowering it more on dished wheels and lsd but not sure after that. And just curious why do you think that this was done up in the 90's ? , i thought it might have been a drift car in Japan but i don't know what the 1.4 engine is like performance wise?!
The problem with the Mitsubishi L300 is that it only had the 2.5 non turbo engine over here.
Does anyone know about LSD if it doesn't have one?

The audio gear and the suspension upgrades would be sort of an indicator of when the car was modded. I don't think this was a drift car as it just isn't set up for it (the stock engine is underpowered for that deal too). It was more than likely a guy's home build for a rally/tarmac car. I doubt the Lancer has an LSD fitted but where there's cash there's always a way. The 1.4 was not going to ever be a performance bred engine, but swapping in anything over 1.8 litres will make the Lancer feel more competent. When you start chasing HP and torque the Lancers' weaknesses will become apparent - the rear leaf springs and the brakes will need upgrading (looks like the rest of the suspension should be up for the job though  )

I see where your coming from. Thanks for the info. Do you know where i could get an lsd sourced so i would have it for when it arrives?
And as for the engine upgrade, if i source the engine would i be able to get gearbox etc to suit on this website?

Widened rims, I like them.
Do you know the offsets?
The look like they go into the negative to me. You might find you'll end up with limited steering lock?
