starter motor relay

Post by rob020 »

hey all,

i have an lc hatch thats being converted to 2.6 efi...

i have a relay (like a bosche headlight realy) mounted near the battery with the wires going to the starter motor wires...

i dont quite understand this... would this have been done to fix a faulty starter relay?

im guessing i can remove it if ive changed starters?

cheers,
rob

edit.. well, i removed it anyway.... shouldnt need it.. i hope

More info required - relays have 2 sets of wires - one set is used to trigger the relay, the other set is for the thing being activated. Eg you might not want to run all the amps used to power your high beams thru your headlight switch, so you would use a relay to make the connection for you and power the relay from your headlight switch.

well... it had an earth wire, and the other three wires went to the starter motor...

im guessing it was just a dodgy repair for a dodgy starter relay??

cheers,
rob

edit: i dont really know much more because i bought the car with the engine already transplanted, but not wired up... these wires were taper to the + battery cable and they couldnt have gone anywhere but the starter

Another possibility is the car used to have an alarm with a 2 point imobiliser (ignition & starter)
To by pass that one yeah, all the wires would have been run to teh starter.

God knows why you would leave it there, but thats part of the fun with a 2nd hand car
