Temperamental fuel /temp gauges

So after a couple of years of trouble free motoring , the gauges decide to spoil the party.
And just to keep it interesting ,there is no set pattern to problem. Sometime both gauges work fine. Other times one gauge will stop working , but the other one still operates. At no time (so far) have both gauges been inoperative simultaneously. Another weirdness is the fact that if say, the fuel gauge is not working, it will not kick in until I have finished the current driving stint ,switched off the motor..and then restarted it. Then it may work fine for a couple of weeks, then out of the blue it happens again. It cant be the voltage stabiliser, otherwise both gauges would fail at the same time.
