Post by Adrian »

Hi again - I'm at loss as to HOW to remove the steering lock barrel from my GA galant. can anyone help me with this please. My workshop manual is of no use and I haven't been able to find anything on the forum or online. I have piks to put up to help me with guidance but I cant find how to post them here so help with that would be appreciated too. Adrian .....................

Well I've done this operation twice in the last 5 days to two Sigmas I'm wrecking and getting rid of. First thing you have to do is remove the steering wheel and plastic steering column surrounds. Then remove the indicator and wiper stalk assembly. Now you should be able to see the ignition barrel much better. There should only be a couple of headless or one-way screws that hold the barrel in place. Now comes the tricky part. You will need a screw extractor kit. Here is an example of one:

To use the kit, first use a drill to make a hole at least 3mm deep on the head of the screw to be removed. Then choose one of the screw extractor special drills, one that is smaller than the overall size of the screw's head. Drill with the screw extractor in a clockwise direction. Don't worry if it doesn't seem to be screwing into the hole you drilled before, it should still work. After about 10 seconds of drilling in a clockwise direction, set your drill to counter-clockwise and apply light pressure towards the headless screw you're trying to remove. You should see the screw start to spin out.

Here is a small video that shows you what to do:

Or, what I have always done is tap a slot in the headless bolt with a chisel and use a big flat head screw driver to unscrew them

The Dremel's a good idea... but failing that, I usually go for a baby pair of vise-grips and grip the head of the screw and go from there. Also useful for rounded bolts/messed up screw heads. And if you can, get a pair with flat pincers (rather than the rounded ones), as they tend to grip slightly better :-) Good luck!
