Drive-Way Rattle Can Paint Job

Just having some fun with the sigma giving it a rattle can paint job after a failed attempt at the famed $50 paint job using a roller...

Starting point - Car has different coloured panels due to me smashing it a little and the paint is generally in poor condition due to sitting out for a year with a busted engine under a cheap car cover that did more harm than good. So faded, cracked and peeling paint with some areas of rust starting to come though lead me to say "It can't get any worst..."

Image

I knew from research that it's all in the prep and I was keen to go back to bare metal so tried a number of methods including media blasting, hand & machine sanding, chemical stripping, and scraping. Finally settled on using paint stripping discs on and angle grinder as my main method as the paint was really tough and would clog sanding discs quickly. I know sounds extreme but as long as you don't focus on the same spot to long and have a lightness of touch the paint flies off leaving a brushed finish which I was tempted to just put a clear coat over. Only problem with the strip discs was if any body-filler was encountered it took it out in a plump of white dust. I was never told by the previous owner that the car had been re-sprayed but there seemed to be a lot of BOG on the car which I hadn't expected.

Image

Took about 45 mins to get the bonnet back to bare metal with the strip disc.

Image

So skip past some removal of trim, light fittings, and chrome. Fast forward past the doggy BOG work and associated hours of hand sanding. Move past the masking up of surrounding panels to some results!! Paint that I used was Whites Rust Proofing Rattle Cans the ones that don't require primer probably use other brands but this was what was available at local Bunnings. Attempting to get satin effect went with the satin black but the colour was too flat and marked easily, so went instead with the gloss black and got the result below.

Image

Really happy with the results just enough shine to reflect the light to show the angles on the car but not glossy enough to fully see your reflection. Some texture striping can be seen in the reflection in the bonnet caused by the can running out of paint and only spraying propellant but another coat with a fresh can should fix this. Generally the vertical panels (Guards, doors, etc) are coming out better than the flat panels like the bonnet and boot lid. Hopefully will improve with practice or possibly swapping the nozzle on the can to a "Rusto" cap which gives a wide spray pattern.

Image

Lots of BOG in passenger side so going to just sand back the old paint as the condition is better and spray over the top. Will also do the same with the roof as metal is really thin up there and I don't think it will take the strip disc.

Image
Boot lid was the original test subject for all the different techniques used so has taken a bit of a beating but figured this was the easiest panel to replace... still came out great, although maybe a little warped from a bit too much pressure with the strip disc.

Image

Painting in progress today thanks to low wind levels and a light drizzle of rain to help keep bits of the universe out of the wet paint!! Actually vacuumed the driveway to minimise dust that could be kicked up as I moved around the car, so far been lucky with this with only small dust particles and no bugs. Bugs are the reason I don't spray at night as well.

Image

Cage is there to stop sticky kid fingers from infecting the finish. Plan to paint the 15" chaser stock wheels same colour of the car and attempt to get some BF Goodrich tyres with white raised lettering for a mini mad max interceptor muscle car look. Window tint also on the agenda.

Image

Original paint on the passenger side with the usual rust spots coming though on the bottoms of the doors and rough spots where bump trim was removed.

Image

Now on to restoring the trim pieces but not sure which way to go... do I spray them chrome (match other trim on car), flat black (keep it understated but noticeable), or same colour as the car so they disappear. Opinions?

Image

Well that's it for now will update as progress is made...

Those strip discs are pretty good aren't they? Although they can get pretty pricey to strip a whole car if it's got a lot of coats of paint on it.

I'll be interested to see what it looks like when completed.

When it's done, if a bird craps on it, you'd want to get rid of it pretty quick, I don't think the aerosol spray stands up to whether and conditions very well

Yeah time will tell on abrasion resistance and longevity. It's an exterior rust proofing paint for gates and exterior metal work so I'm quietly optimistic but Whites give a 5 year warranty on the paint if applied properly... love to see there faces if I put that warranty claim in. Strip discs I used run about $18 and I got about two panels per disc so $72 spent so far for bonnet, front guards, two doors, rear guard and boot lid with enough to do another small panel, door, or side skirts. Great thing is can spread the cost out over the duration of the job, one strip disc and a can of paint is $34 and that will do a couple of panels... pretty cheap as long as the panels are straight. Thanks for your support Dave admired the spray job you did on the green wagon long time ago at the Parramatta meet.

Cool, can't wait to see the finished product. Black was actually a factory colour, though i have never seen one.
Did you consider doing a pressure-pack job in white ..definitely not as bad-ass as black, but inconsistencies would be less obvious.

I'd keep em as they are just clean up a little, maybe re-do the silver finish using a silver paint pen.

Mad Max comparison was a bit of a stretch but next mechanical plan I have been thinking about for a while is an SC14 supercharger which starfire did successfully recently (thread; supercharging my GJ on the cheap), I'll have the added fun of trying it with LPG.

PROGRESS UPDATE

Christmas has been taking it's merry toll on my time thanks to working in retail but have managed to complete majority of drivers side apart from the detail round windows which is scheduled for tomorrow.

Image

Image

After serious consideration I have decided not to bog unless there is a hole and also strip all panels back to bare metal (and not just paint over old paint as I had planned to earlier)... simply because I would rather see a smoothly painted bent rather than a patch of bog with a different finish, this will mean a few areas will be redone, but not until later. Prime example is this area on front drivers guard in picture below. Respray has now been renamed the "Warts & All Respray", because you can see all the history of abuse...

Image

Just thought I'd throw in a pic of paint I'm using for job.

Image

In keeping with the theme of the respray restored the traditional badly faded drivers side tail light with the spray cans below. Highly recommend this product as it did an awesome job. Process was basically remove from vehicle, remove lenses (pain in the arse as someone had siliconed the shit out of them), clean degrease etc, spray on product as per instructions, reassemble and silicone the shit out of them again as you broke the clips on the lens when you took it apart... Spray cans where about $16 dollars each probably enough to do whole car, considering how much I have seen NOS taillights go on eBay for recently time and money well spent.

Other progress to report is passenger side is also stripped and almost ready for paint and also looking at replacing hood ornament with something a little different...

Preference to the Skull but the Chrysler Imperial Phoenix tells the tale of how the car keeps rising from the ashes and just won't die!

The coloured lens paint worked a treat! As for the 'hood' ornament I'd go for the skull or the cross hairs (the skull is self explanatory - it will tie in with the chrome work, the cross hair will work with the rat paint job (H) ) The Imperial ornament looks 'cheap'.

I know you're a fair way through this now, but have you seen Plasti Dip?

Yep, Plasti Dip came up in my earlier research actually watched that exact video... though it was cool but wasn't convinced. Original paint on car was very poor (pitted and crows feet) and I thought this would show through the Plasti Dip add rust in the usual places and I thought it was best left for those with Audi's and a weekend to spare...

There's a couple of cars cruising around in Adelaide with the plasti dip finish on them - a series 5 BMW, a Range Rover and an Audi. Instant Bat-mobile black finish.

looks great mate! especially for a drive way can job! i recently done a back yard can job. turned out great. until the tarp stuck to it. i left it out in the sun for 3 days. wasnt humid etc etc. wasnt tacky when i put it under the tarp (shed lol). but a week later. it was stuck like glue!! i used 3M paint too! but, ah well. shit happens ;)

i reakon the trim would look awesome chrome or matte black! either way it'll look cool.

and also the skull hood emblem would be wicked! run some red led's to his eyes :p

but all up, it looks wicked! keep up the good work :)

Progress update...

Well car body is painted so the bulk of the work is complete!!

Image

Image

Image

All that's really left to paint is the wheels to make them as blaaack as the rest of the car. Once the wheels are black I will be installing the Bridgestone Eager 225/60/15 on the rear which will help with the muscle car theme which leads me to a story of coincidence... happen across the Bridgestone on ebay during one of my regular searches only had a few hours left so decided on spur of moment to buy. Following day went to collect after work and as I walked up to the front of the address for pick-up garage door was open. It took me a second or two as I approached but there it was a sigma turbo buried underneath a few other bits and pieces belonging to TR11KY... anyway had a chat about sigmagalant, plans for his car and it's glory days, and my lowly beast. Small world...

Image

So whats left... reinstalling all the things I took off and figuring out which hood ornament to buy. Current favorite if I had the money below!!

Image

Will do a summary of advantages and disadvantages, method & madness when I have lived with it for a while (plus some final photos when it all comes together). Currently unregistered so won't be able to show her off at the Windsor/Wisemans ferry meet which sucks (was actually considering hiring a car trailer so I could attend!!)

wow...how much money did you spend on spraycans of enamel?

Re: Drive-Way Rattle Can Paint Job

by smithdavidjames
Thanks Ozdusterdave, haven't really considered that yet so Its time for some accounting seeing as I nearly finished...

Total cans used so far 11 @ $14.90 this did the exterior of the car not including door jams, two wheels, and exterior accessories (wipers & small trim panels). Will need a 12th can to finish last two wheels and rear window louver.

Devil is in the prep work that is required as stated earlier in thread so strip discs for angle grinder, sand paper, paint stripper, and heaps of masking tape set me back approximately $120 if you don't count the power tools used.

So doing the math set me back roughly $300 but as I said earlier in the thread I have been able to spread that cost over 5 months which maid it more manageable on tight budget...

Work has ground to a halt due to the arrival of another pair of little feet in the family. Only been able to give the car a coat to Turtle Wax Colour Shine in black which has helped to water to run off but still retain the satin effect and even out colour a little...

Awesome guild, any more photos and updates? I would love to make a feature on this car for our galant-sigma.com website!
