In the spirit of having fun and evolving me daily driver it's been 4/5 years since I sprayed my car on my driveway... so it's time for a change.

This time internet told me to bed-liner/armour/linex/rhino line specifically for this job its Dupli Colour Aerosol Bed Armour.

Image

Minimal prep for this paint job except for scuffing up surface and dealing with small amount of surface rust as this stuff goes on thick.

Image

Removed as much as possible to make job easier

Close up of texture showing how rough but I am looking for durable tough surface which is gives impression of Matt finish which I cant buff out.

Image

Texture only relieves itself when the you get close. When spraying this stuff it takes a number of coats to build up product and it is really difficult to apply without leaving stripping. Technique seems to be to spray from a distance of about 2 feet randomly on the last coat to cover any striping and this gives a really even coat.

Going to play off the Matt finish by painting trim pieces as gloss black as physically possible.

To be continued... Hope pictures work.

I actually don't mind the look of that. Certainly more durable than rattle can paint too.

Dave.

And Skip to the end... work log FAIL as I ended up doing whole car in 4 days and forgot to take pictures along the way but I'm pleased with the result.
Plus rego'ed for another year and first new set of tires in about 6 years!! 40 years here we come!!

Old girl looks pretty tough and surface is also pretty durable now it's fully cured plus easy to touch up.
Couple of new lights pulled out of storage, two new front guards with repeater deletes (plus get rid of rust) and bumper fitment adjusted when it all went back together, so looking pretty sharp.

Close up of finish on front guard... hardest part of the job was laying down enough coats to completely cover, gloss would show through where it was thin.

Tips for spraying with Dupli-Color Bed Armour are:
- HEAT THE CANS!! Put cans into hot water for 10mins before use I boiled a Kettle and then used hot water about 1 to 3 ratio. USE CAUTION AND THINK ABOUT AMBIENT TEMPERATURE. I was spraying in about 15c degree weather.
- Have a cloth handy to wipe nozzle as it will clog/build up with product.
- First half of a hot can will spray fine, even, and fast... second half not so much you will get larger splodges of product especially when doing horizontal panels such as roof/boot/bonnet as product has a tendency to drip.
- Shake Can every couple of minutes as per instructions.
- Stripping can be over come by spraying further away from panel and letting product rain down onto surface
- 4 coats to be safe.. first two closer for coverage and next 2 at distance to even out finish.
- Finish will be soft until it cures completely, if possible avoid installation of wing mirrors and trim until a week has passed (I learnt the hard way).

Above contrast of gloss acrylic plastic trim pieces.
Using 303 Automotive Protectant for maintenance of the surface... prevent fade, deepen black, and stop dust getting into surface (problem because of ruffness). 303 is great for this as it not a sticky after application unlike tyre foam which I also tried (don't do this everything sticks) because the internet told me too....

Above front guard at a couple of paces from car... door slightly rippled from accident a few years ago but finish helps to hide a little.
New Hankook Optimo K415 so far a good tyre (haven't had them in the wet yet) but limited options for same tread pattern in a 195 for front and a 225 for rear, must put that center cap back on.

Last pic a shot of the engine bay... not the cleanest I know but functional and now with improved cable management after a head gasket change which turned out to be just leads and plugs. Theres a day of my life I'm not getting back.

How mush did it cost? Total $366 probally about $400 with other smaller stuff I already had...
- 12 cans @ $20 each Multi-Buy at Supercheap usually around $25
- Masking Tape... Don't cheap out on this it will kill your life... 3M Scotch blue $14
- 1 Cans of Acrylic for wipers, plastic decals, and center caps $12 (still got plenty left)

Usual disclaimer... Try this at YOUR OWN RISK experiment with the product yourself and see if it's right for you.

Remember Guys and Dolls drive daily, repair, repeat...
