my diff/brake upgrade
my diff/brake upgrade
The current setup in my A53H is GH Sigma/Scorpion struts and brakes in the front and standard diff 3.89:1 ratio and drums on the rear.
I have managed to source a 2lt GE Sigma Automatic diff centre after much search that has a ratio of 3.54:1. This will give me a bit less take off but a bit better on the highway.
My next obstacle is to mount some disc brakes on the rear. I am going to use Scorpion discs and callipers as i have them lying around. I have pulled one axel out and have noticed that it will have to be machined slightly for the disc to fit, both the centre ring that centres the disc on the hub and the outer of the hub so the disc will fit over. Also using the Scorpion stuff i am able to easily upgrade again to Starion vented discs and the Starion calliper. I do not want to change the track or shorten a Commodore/Ford etc. diff as it is unwarranted for what I need.
This is what I have found so far and will update as things progress.

Re: my diff/break upgrade
Get hold of a GH Scorpion diff and you should then have a 3.308 ratio diff along with the standard disc setup.
The starion vented disc and calipers are a "bolt on" upgrade from there..
Cheers.

Re: my diff/break upgrade
I am very interested in this.
I will be following your progress, I have always wondered what the differences were between the axle/housing ends between the disc/drum set ups.
Any pics would be appreciated too

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
i would, but finding a GH is a problem and also its wider so wont be able to fit my rims. and am not going to pump out my guards.
I did on my GB Sedan put a complete Sigma 3.42:1 disc diff in with the right offset rims front and rear was able to get the track the same.
I have since done a GK Scorpion 3.3:1 diff with Starion brakes for it.

Will take some pix tomorrow when i do a bit more on it. as far as i have got so far is getting the different ratio centra and pulling one axel out to see what needs to be done to fit the Dics on the axle hub.

This is my spare Galant diff with the drum brakes removed.
As you can see in these photo's the disc does not fit over the axle hub and will need to be machined down.

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
Interesting work man, be keen to see how ya go!
Am i understanding correctly then, that the ge sigma diff is the same width as the galant?

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
No, no. All i took from the GE is the diff centre due to it giving me a different ratio.
I have a place that will do machine down the axel hub, just need to drop them down to him, then i can start the caliper mounting bracket.
I havn't done much more on this due to putting a motor together for my PWS Sigma.

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
ah cool thats wha i thought at first but then you guys were talking scorpian centres etc, which i knew didnt fit...
Sounds like it will be a good upgrade tho! handle a bit more power and better braking is always welcome!! Great work!

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
I guess all diff upgrades require some fabricating but I found a really easy one - get a scorpion complete rear end, cut off all the mounts and weld on leaf spring mounts and fit starion rotors and calipers - done!
Good drivers have dead bugs on the side windows.....

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
As i stated earlier i have already been down this path with both a Sigma and Scorpion diff into the Galant. I do not want the extra width as then i cant run the rim's i want and do not want to flare/pump out the guards. This is why i am modifying the Galant diff.Sideways wrote:I guess all diff upgrades require some fabricating but I found a really easy one - get a scorpion complete rear end, cut off all the mounts and weld on leaf spring mounts and fit starion rotors and calipers - done!

Before Christmas would be tops
Do you think you will have it out by the 8th? Would make it easy for me to bring it back with the trailer

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
Should be able to have it for you then. I just gotta move the Galant, the other Galant, the still boxed up rotisserie, a 1600 motor and the Sigma, 3 other diffs and then should be able to access it.A112H wrote:Before Christmas would be tops

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
I just wish there was a relatively easy way to put a lower ratio diff into a Galant ....
Re: my diff/brake upgrade
EX Lancer LSD centre into Scorpion housing......or an L200 4WD LSD centre
But I guess you're stuck with the Galant rear end for Historic so the only answer is a works 4.6 LSD at around $1200

L200 is a 4.8:1 ratio and will not fit into a scorpion housing due to being alot bigger and also axle's are bigger diameterSideways wrote:EX Lancer LSD centre into Scorpion housing......or an L200 4WD LSD centre

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
Not any more (HRA freed up their rules a couple of years ago) ..... but even to fit something else under there (eg. a Hilux rear end) is pretty big $$ seeing I would have to pay someone to do itSideways wrote:But I guess you're stuck with the Galant rear end for Historic

Mmm, that's odd then.....I ended up with a 4.8 from 'pinch-a-part' that was marked as L200 4WD and is now sitting in a scorpion housing........
Were there some early/oddball models made or perhaps did it originate from something else??

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
Front diff from some early 4x4 l300's will fit in the 10 bolt Scorp diff, so it's quite conceivable that the 4x4 L200 front diff could possibly be the same..Sideways wrote:Mmm, that's odd then.....I ended up with a 4.8 from 'pinch-a-part' that was marked as L200 4WD and is now sitting in a scorpion housing........Were there some early/oddball models made or perhaps did it originate from something else??

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
Yes, I do remember that now you mention it - thanks.
Given where it originated, it was more likely the guy in the yard marked it incorrectly as L200...

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
Oops, my bad. Mine is from a L300 (not L200) 4x4 but from the rear diff, hence why not fitting. I have a 4.6 out of a L300 rear wheel drive in my GK at the moment with the Scorpion housing and Straion brakes, but you pretty much dont need first gear and is completely useless for going on the highway, good for skids though.

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
Yes, 3.9's are good for road cars but 4.6 to 4.8's are perfect for rally cars - top-end speed isn't so much of a priority - it's more about punch between corners

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
3.9 is still shit for a roady. My Galant with Jap 5spd and stock 3.89 diff was running 3300rpm at 110kph. Thats why I am going 3.3 on the new diff, I would seriously go 2.78 if I could
Re: my diff/brake upgrade
Really?? If you're running a 4G32 you'd have no pull at all. It'd be like driving a Honda Scamp with four rugby players on board
I remember an old GB of mine had a 3.9 with a jap box (and a good horsepower 2.2 non-balance shaft Astron) that you could easily run the dial off the speedo and easily do 160 in third gear - that was a hoot to drive!!

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
Was running the Astron and will now be running the Sirius.
The astron easy ran off the dial and yeah, was about 150-160 in 3rd (on the track of course) but at 110kph it was pulling like 3500rpm, too noisy, too fuely and I didn't like it for cruising.

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
True, though all my Mitsu's over the years have never really been daily drivers so it never really bothered me so much.
The worst part is I had all the numbers for a close-ratio Hollinger Jap box written in a notebook from one of my old rally cars but do you think I can find it find it......??

Re: my diff/brake upgrade
my hilux rear is a 4.10, 3.90s are hard to come by out here, most of the hiluxes here were 4.10 or 4.30s, 3.9s not so much.

DEFINATELY with you on that one!!!
i'm considering going a Commodore (VL vintage) BW diff with the standard 3.08:1 ratio......I much prefer to spend 200km's of highway driving in (relative) comfort rather than trying to save .3 of a second in a 400m blast
Having said that, since my car is going to be based on a "genuine looking GSR wagon", (N.B. this term is used lightly) i want to be able to use as many Mitsubishi Parts as possible, so i'll more than likely end up with Starion front struts/brakes and a Scorpion 3.30:1 diff with Starion rear brakes
