Brake Lines

Post by lance »

Hi all Went down to my local brake specialest to get a full set of brake lines.
He sugested that l just have one hose instead of 2 per side , cheaper less joins
I put my trust in him and only said , as long as its road worthy.
Driving off home started to think hows it going to work?
It needs the join for that clip to hold it onto the strut.
If l do what he says and just thead it through that hole on the strut it will chafe .
So my question is is it a good idea to have only one hose?

you'll find that the vast majority of cars only use one hose on each side of the car.....usually, it goes from the caliper to the strut....then it's a steel pipe back to the master cylinder.

There's only a couple of cars that use two hoses per side...Toyota Tarago springs to mind....and they were prone to failing......

If your really that concerned.....get a 2nd opinion and speak to an engineer

When we do braided lines, we use a ferrule that slips over the hose (tight fit) and is retained to the strut with the circlip like standard.

If you don't use something, the hose will be liable to chafe on something.

I was recommended the same thing when buying hoses for my old Lancer Hatch. It is cheaper, and makes more sense.
Just do as Gaz says, insulate your hose so no damage is caused.
I wish I had gone that way, as GH Sigma caliper to strut hoses $60 each (or something like that), and I'd already bought the strut to body ones (can't remember exact the price).

Point is, it would have been cheaper and easier to use a custom single hose then muck around chasing the original type.

Thanks like you both said is how it turned out. Single line with a coller for the retainer clip . All up including the back hose $115.00
You may have read that l have had touble with my calipers, the problem kind of solved. Had to machine down ( angle grinder ) and file
finish my left caliper slide to the same as the right to make it fit in. Is that a good thing ??????????? It works

very unusual repair......but if it's safe and it works.......then that's all that matters really

if you get any hoses so long as they are stamped ADR it should be legal.
I did this option in my galant and am doing it in my lancer, i put extra insulation in the middle of them and then cable tied them to the strut to prevent rubbing.
