Do you have to use two hands because the button is hard, or because the brake is too tight? You can loosen it off at the back wheel... Or get a new assembly. The button is only to release the ratcheting stop and release the brake...

The button was too tight, tok everything apart last night, turned out there was a bead stuck in there that was stopping it from going the whole way.
now i need to tighten the cable.
