What parts to use to finish off green struts

Post by unique10 »

G'day everyone,

I've got a complete set of green struts and as the title asks, id like to know what others have used build them up. what size coil over kit do i buy? whats a good weight spring? what shocks fit in there and part no. wise if you know? do vc commodore shocks fit? even when lowered?
which adjustable camber top is used? (otomoto have 2 different types - http://www.otomoto.com.au/c/4037308/1/camber-tops.html)

They're going into a gc hardtop which i want to run 2 inches lower and its going to be used by an old bloke for road use more than anything, but want it crisp enough to corner not like a boat. also not worrying about brakes for now, just happy to have the ability to change them later on.

cheers guys :)

Okay, mine had been converted to coil over when I bought them but weren't finished, basically just had the landing cut off and threaded sleeve welded on.
I used VB-S inserts, mine are Monroe sensortrac and find they are perfect. If you are cutting the length of the tubes down the Camira inserts are shorter than the Commodore.
Spring wise I am using 250lb King Spings and again have found them to be fantastic - p/n KPS-042
I am also running K-Mac adjustable strut tops, they allow adjustment for camber and castor.
As for brakes I have DBA slotted rotors.
For pads, GH are the same as Commodore so there is a huge range of types and brands to suit your needs.

Some links that might help
Drilled and slotted rotors

Cheap pads

Good pads

Performance pads

Springs
This is King Springs Prosport Catalogue

These will all suit, just need to measure the diameter of your tubes and buy a set to suit. I think they are 58mm or there abouts?

Inserts
Cheap

Good

What ever inserts you buy you will need to use the gland nut that comes with them

Hope this helps

cool thanks for that jase, but i was hoping you could break it down even more for me.
what size coil sleeves am i looking for? i cant get to my struts to measure them myself, but i had my brother check and he said they're 55mm, can anyone confirm this? then once i've got the sleeves, how far from the top do you weld them?

is it necessary to cut them down if your running the car 2inches lower?

other than that you've give me what i need so thanks mate :) however i dunno about your strut tops. do you find you actually use the ability to adjust them or have you set it once and forgot it? i have the same ones on my gd and im not a fan of them for fear of stuffing them up. im actually starting to like the camber adjustable ones because they seem much easier to set. im only applying this to a; drive to an event, jack up, camber it hard, win, jack up, set back to street camber, drive home. thoughts?

Yeah, 55mm sounds about right, pretty sure you can get 56mm kits so will work perfect. My springs are 60mm, so again 55mm sounds about right.
No need to cut the tubes for 2in, mine are still stock length and I have heaps of adjustment.

if you have no need to adjust camber you're probably better off sticking with the factory original strut hats
