Brake upgrade for GD galant

Post by vr4galant »

Hello Everyone

I want to do a brake upgrade for my gd galant. Ive been speaking with hopper stoppers in victoria and they do bigger upgrade kits for sigma. Would this kit be the same on a gd galant? They didn't know if it would be the same. What are other options for the gd galant is it possible to fit a 4 pot brembo calliper with a five stud conversion? The car is intended for circuit and drag racing.

Thanks Steve

all i can say is that its going to be huuuuge dollars...huuuuge amount of labour and a huuuuge amount of R & D.

You definately won't need brembo 4-pot calipers....WAAYY overkill for a car that will weight in about 900kg.

There are a few people who have done a couple of Galants 'here and there'......track them down, and quizz what they have done.

My advice, grab a pair of C6 Corvette calipers, they bolt onto the Falcon AUII, AUIII, BA and BF with very good affordibility on pads, rotors,
These calipers stop an 1800kg V8 Falcon, they'll stop a 900kg Galant

If it is being used for track only you can get a wilwood brake kit for a 69 Camaro with some minor tweaking they bolt on.

I want to change to a 5 stud pattern is there any hubs that go straight on? Are the sigma hubs the same size as the gd galant?

Mine are 12.19inch discs and just fit inside my 15in Simmons. Paul reworks the bracket and they bolt straight onto Gh green struts wish I had of waited and ordered the six pot kit might even change it yet.

What about the hub? How did you go 5 stud? Only mod was the caliper mounting bracket? Looks like two lots of holes for studs, 5x114.5 and 5x120?

Hub bolts straight on comes in the kit if you look around kits can be had for $8-900 and yes you just screw the studs into either ford or chev pattern as for part numbers look on wilwoods website search 69 Camaro disc spindle and choose which kit you want to use and if you can't be stuffed modifying the calliper mount talk to Paul he has templates for setups like mine and the smaller 11inch disc.

Also forgot the weight saving is well worth it over all the other kits. I also spoke to my engineer about these and he said the kit is great but due to the callipers not being ADR approved he would want to change the callipers to series 4-5 rx7.

Wollongong and Paul Testa is the one to talk to in regards to the calliper mounts.

Cheers for the help/advise Mic. I am thinking the drilled and slotted 11 inch DP-DB Pro. They seem like an absolute bargain at around AUD$1100, plus freight.
Looks like I need to start looking for a Ford stud pattern BW78 LSD now

those callipers have dust boots so they should be adr approved so the engineer should allow these.. It looks like a very nice kit.

Hey Mic did you use the bearings that came with kit or the original ones from the galant..

Thanks Steve

Use the supplied bearings just need to use the standard retaining nut as the Camaro one is huge.

Yes the kit that has been listed does have dust boots but that is not the issue, until someone like a major importer of these products (Rocket) pays for the callipers to be tested and ADR approved they will be illegal in australia.

Also the discs are tiny on the 11in kit mine are 12.19in (307mm) and still fit inside 15in Simmons I have also upgraded to a late model commodore master and I also have the same sized kit on the back of my car.

That's great I might get that kit and change the calipers that are ADR approved. Do you know what calipers would suit this setup and are ADR approved? Is the spindle size on the galant same as the camaro?

What diff are you running Mic?
I think I will just run the 11's on the front (still a massive upgrade over GH Sigma) maybe 12.7's
I think the stock rear XF Falcon brakes will be more than good enough on the Galant

If I were to change the callipers I would use series 4/5 rx7 cheap and plentiful and only a mm wider than the wilwood discs (wilwoods about 21mm thick series 4/5 are 22mm thick) IMO the wilwood hub kit is far superior to the other options and weighs a heap less.

I run a vl Borg Warner with 31 spline billet axles 4.11 gears, full spool, TA diff girdle with a wilwood 12.19 brake kit and 4 pot callipers with hand brake. If I were to do it again I would have gone with a 9inch just for the availability and cost of quality lsd units. The only decent unit in 31spline for Borg Warner is a Harrop at $1400 you can get a cone type but it will wear quickly in my application

Nice, i was thinking a Ford BW78, mainly due to the 5x114.3 stud pattern. The centres in those is more than strong enough for my application. Which Wilwood kit suits these diffs?

When you get the diff cut down tell them you want ford small or big bearing cups welded onto it then you work out what spacing you have from the axle flange to the bearing cup flange and order the kit that will suit.

Hey Mic just checked out some information on the wilwood brake kit and it seems that the bearings would be loose on the spindle.. Are the spindles on the gh green struts different to the galant?
