Querie K-Mac strut tops

Post by Rally_2.6LC »

Hey all I was wondering if anyone on here has a set of the K-Mac adjustable strut tops, and which style you got.
Im looking at getting a set for my LC, but when I went to order them online I couldnt figure out what price they are.
They are listed as $380 for price category J for #1, however i wanted their stage 2 set's and couldnt work out if this bumped them into the price category K which are $480.

Any help?
Website is here, see if you can make sense of it.

Lancer LA, LB, LC (4 Bolt strut top) '74-'81 #520516 J 1/2/3 $380- pair

When ordering quote Stage 1/2/3 after Part No.
• Stage 1 (Price category J - $380) • Stage 2/3 (Price Category K - $480)

From my understanding. they are the 'J' price category $380, for stage 1
Stage 2 or 3 bumps up to $480.
Hope this help's. I could be wrong though.

The Kmac ones are pretty poor quality for the price in my opinion.

Do you have a recommendation of a brand that is better? When you say poor quality, how exactly do you mean? Like do they break easily, not align properly, etc.? I was thinking about Stage 2 strut tops for my GN, but still weighing up the options especially at $480.

Not really but I looked at a set of the $480.00 ones and they appeared to be cheap and nasty but thats just my opinion. They may work fine. But the otomotto ones look good http://www.otomoto.com.au/HDSystems/sleevekits.htm

Contact Joe Wilson at Heritage Suspension in Olinda (Vic) & get him to make you some. He has done adjustable tops for both David Officer's & Steve Ashton's Galant rally cars. I think (don't quote me though) that they were around $500 a set ?

I'd love to put a set of Joe's struts in my car, but the budget won't allow at present ... :(

I've got a set of the k-mac stage 2 ones that I had in both my LA and LC Lancers. The only real problem I had was that the centre section that holds in the bearing is screwed in and undoes it self when you tighten up the shock bolt. I pulled them apart, added locktite and the problem went away.

Conveniently they are for sale as they are not needed with the new setup. $350. :)

yeah i got kmac ones for my ga..quality leaves alot to be desired...not to mention the adjustability is minimal, the cars design does not allow for strut to move in tower because of spring diameter....its only got maybe 10mm adjustment of original centreline of strut...personally, i would look elsewhere...im not even motivated to put mine in at this stage! kmac crap, dont waste ya cash!!

I got brand new OEM strut tops for my LC courtesy of Hyundai. The original Excel's use a lot of LC compatible parts!
I thought the price to benefit ratio for the adjustable types was a bit hign for street & highway driving...
I think the pair were about $90.

cheers,

Im going with these too. They do look good and they come with a set of springs too, pity they too heavy for what I want.

Galant and Sigma strut tops are the same as early Commodore.

One hole has to be drilled in the strut tower to convert Lancer to the Commodore strut top bolt pattern.

Saves a lot of f&^king around.

Are you sure early Commodore and Sigma strut tops/mounts are the same? They do look close, but I couldn't find any where that can verify this. Can anyone confirm please?

Here are the early Commo ones: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/K-Mac-VB-VC- ... 484&_uhb=1

**EDIT**

After some research, it seems they are different. K-mac has different part numbers.

VB to VL Commodore = 201516 http://www.k-mac.com/pages/newprods/hol ... den_08.htm

GE to GH Sigma and Scorpion = 520116 http://www.k-mac.com/pages/newprods/mit ... ubishi.htm

The K-Mac ones allow you to adjust camber and caster, a fair amount too. Basically the centre (where the insert attaches) slides all around the hole in the strut tower allowing for a lot of adjustment
