LC rear disc conversion

Post by Taz »

Hi guys.
Done a bit of poking round but i cant seem to find a definite answer for this.
I have an LC, and want to do a disc conversion on the rear. The best i can find is possibly an old SA/FB rx7 rear end would 'bolt up' or thereabouts. Has anyone here done this? The less (preferably none) fab work to fit them in the better. That being said, if this is correct, are there any sources that id be able to get said gear off? I dont like my odds of coming across this gear by chance on ebay etc. Even if there was an aftermarket big brake kit as long as its painless to source and throw in im sold. Anyone?

Riffs from similar vintage Toyotas maybe a good staring point (celica, corolla and corona were disc at some point or other).....not to mention the Nissan bluebird S3 was disc rear end also.......come to think of it, some of the TE/F cortinas has discs in the rear.........that should at least give u some areas to look at

rear disc conversions are easy

Find

Any rear disc that will fit your PCD and centre hub
A caliper with an integral hand brake
Make caliper mount and weld it to the axle tube
GH Sigma, 16" Mesh wheels, sports steering wheel and a V8 exhaust

TM/N/P calipers have integral H/B.....as all Falcon caliper from the 1st model (that had discs in the rear....I believe it was XB..1973, from memory).....all the way to the '94 ED Falcon

I believe the magna also uses the same PCD as the older Lancer too

only drama with using an early Falcon caliper is they're to suit a 22mm thick vented disc, most discs to suit 4x114.3 would be around 8-10mm thick

Magna sounds promising

So dig up an old magna and make em fit.
I doubt it but is there anything newer or more common I can fit in to upgrade the brakes down the road? Be a bit of a waste to spend a lot of effort putting in magna brakes to find out a few months later there's almost no viable brake upgrade kits available lol.

Unless u want to invest in the electronic park brake of today's cars....then ur options are limited

I believe Nissan Skyline R31s used the integral handbrake also.....which means the same vintage Pintara more than likely used them also

Dig one of them up

Magna brakes are going to be more than a little lancer is ever going to need

As Scorpma said R31 discs will fit and my be a better option

A stripped out LC would weigh 900kg fully fueled with driver strapped in.......slotted/drilled rotors, good pads, braided hoses and high performance brake fluid is more than enough for such a lil pocket rocket

I'm using a S3 RX7 rear disc (same pcd & vented) with twin spot nissan GTR caliper and fabricated mounts. This is a fairly common set up on most IPRA Mazda's, etc.......

Hmm i was thinking of going down the R31 route. Were the mounts costly to fab? What did the setup cost you in total?

Lots...... when you add a mazda 929 housing, rx4 28 spline axles, RX7 LSD & ratio, Panhard rod and big wheel studs at the same time!

Then it sounds like I'm sticking to r31discs.im not out to spend a fortune on the thing when there's cheaper options.

Are you going to increase the rear track width? Might be something to think about...... and then use a complete disc brake rear end out of whatever is of suitable width.

My set is basically the same as used in most IPRA cars, so I won't need to upgrade unless I install another 250+ rwhp.

if ur really lucky, u could use the entire rear end out of an EX Lancer, tho u might want to look at fitting in IRS and the Vented disc brakes fitted on the Starion

A cheap option would be a GJ-GN Scorpion rear end.

Same PCD and only a little wider than standard.

Fabrication work will be required but it would be relatively simple work.

The 10 bolt diff will be stronger than the std 8 bolt, but not a whole lot heavier..

Rare, but there are LSD's available.

Cheap and simple conversion.

Cheers.

I dont even know what i need/want, and freight for a whole rear diff assembly to brisbane would be stonkingly expensive

I used the mazda set for availability of bits. I can still buy crown wheel & pinions new from Mazda or Racing Beat. LSD's are pretty common and available new for either a MX5 & S2000, as they basically use the same set up as early mazda's.

I went through the Mitsubishi diff stuff 20 years ago and finding LSD's was a drama back then. I can only imagine what its like now......

If you want something that's never going to blow up I use a shortened Hilux diff, with LSD and R31 Skyline discs and calipers.
But very heavy....
My 2.6 LC Rally car with full cage weighs in at 1050kg wet (minus driver).

'80 LC 2.6L rally car (generally something broken until 2 weeks before an event)
'71 GA 2.6 Turbo project (i only wanted the diff and got another project)

Scorpion housing with Starion/VR4 LSD centre is also an option to look at
