Have u considered the complete rear end out of an XD/E/F????
I think it was A112H that mentioned this diff for it's wide range of ratios (and he's dead right)...but if you put in the complete rear end (rotor to rotor).....you get the option of running LSD, you get all the different ratios and you get the ventilated rotors as standard (with the hanbrake mechanism in the caliper itself).......and if by chance you run more power into the car and wanna stronger diff again.....the 9" Disc brake rear end (out of the same model Falcon but with the V8) should bolt in....if not with minimal mods
(since i'm converting to 5 stud....this a great option (for me) in particular as im keen for 4W Ventilated discs (in conjunction with the Hoppers Stoppers front end kit)

I used this conversion in my Escort Mk1 and all up it cost $2500 including suspension mods. (the Ford diff that is)

Re: r31 diff converion
how did you go with brake balance, pedal feel
was that drive in/drive out...supplied and fitted???

Re: r31 diff converion
That price was just for mods and parts, I did the work myself.
I have fitted a Willwood pedal box with bias so the brake thing should be fine but I haven't driven it yet.
The handbrake took a bit of fiddling as the Falcon has more "pull" on the lever.
I had to jack up the lever and lengthen the bottom to get more travel.
In NSW the car needs seperate brake boosters front and back and the guys at Hydroboost supplied 2 to do the job.
As the booster in the Escort is in the engine bay linked directly to the pedal, both boosters are now under the dash.

Re: r31 diff converion
ah yeah....i had a 9" conversion done on my car few years ago....$2200 drive in drive out, with sigma discs on the rear......shoulda just used that money at the local brothel......I would have at least enjoyed the screwing that i would've recieved there!!!!!!.......not to mention...last longer than the diff did

Re: r31 diff converion
I use the same diff in my current competition car, also Escort MK1, and it has copped a belting for almost 4 years now and all I have done is tighten the LSD.
It uses drum brakes, so no brake issues.
I used a Nissan 620 diff in my LC rally car, 4.625 locker, and apart from redrilling the axles it bolted straight in = bullet proof

Re: r31 diff converion
I modified an LSD disc BTR 78 out of EF XR6 to fit in my GH sig all up cost was $320, personally i wouldn't use the vented XD E F brakes as the calipers are rubbish
Front brakes are XA falcon/WB holden conversion kit cost $210 from castlemain rodshop and is actually designed for a TE cortina
I run a datsun stanza booster (sigma boost will also work) with a Falcon master cyl
pretty much all detailed in my G spec GH thread

Re: r31 diff converion
yeah i did look at that..........i had planned on using that diff as u can put 324mm ventilated rotors as a bolt on upgrade (was done on my Fairlane)...but went against that as the wheels that i want only come in 15" wheels as its largest diameter

Re: r31 diff converion
yeah the standard rotors fit.....but they are only solid rotors.....im pretty keen on ventilated rotors and the only ventilated rotor that bolts on to that hub is too big for a 15" wheel

Re: r31 diff converion
there is no gains to be had from the vented rear rotor, it just doesn't work hard enough to warrant the venting
My cortina has the old XF vented disc but only because i had them here when i did the 9" conversion, The EF set up is better by far and is more than capable at stopping a sigma, you'll run out of front brakes or grip before anything else
It has a better caliper better hand brake setup you can get performance pads and every part for them is still available new
Plus the entire BTR housing is better that the old BW75-78

Re: r31 diff converion
yeah fair point about the efficiency of te newer calipers........just i just like thought of 4W ventilated Disc brakes.....and you can still buy performance rotors and pads for the earlier cars easy enough

Re: r31 diff converion
Im talking good pads like green stuff not metal kings etc you can get them in Bendix ultimate db1078 (XE -F) but are rather pricey
you can get Bendix SRT pads for the EF calipers
caliper parts are getting very hard to find like slides and R clips, these tend to seize up over time or get a step worn in them
its a dated heavy old system with very little if any upsides
If your getting a custom diff made and you really want vented discs look at something other than the old ford setup, things like Toyota Soarer TT have a 307mm vented rear disc that a 15" rim will fit over and are the same pcd as ford, and theres heaps of performance pads calipers and discs to choose from
Then again if you already have the ford stuff then go with it to keep costs down
