Depends on how you drive it. There are guys on the forum with 200+ still using the Jap 5 speed. To upgrade is big bikkies

Dont forget when looking for a Jap that there are two belhousing stud pattens. Measure the 2 lower/outer bellhousing bolt holes on the motor and get a gearbox to match. Will be either 310mm or 330mm.

The wreckers is always a good start? (look for one with the lowest number on the odo too  )

From your other thread, you have an auto yeah? you'll need a gearbox thats is behind a 2lt astron, & while your there, grab the flywheel too, probably wise to also grab the speedo cable & the front bit of the tail shaft that goes into the gear box. you may or may not find that you will need a different length tail shaft (theres too many variable to say.)

Diff? you should already have a 10-bolt diff in there being a scorp, weld it up, should last a while.

Nick.

PS: oh... 'jap' box's have reverse bottom right on the H, if its top left, run like hell

The "jap" 5 speeds are the most common in the sigmas and scorpions. I think they're called the KM132

just about any manual sigma or scorpion from about 1980 onwards should have the jap 5 speed.

and some of the early 1978 2.0L sigmas were jap 5spd as well.

like 81GL said, you want the one where reverse gear is located on the rear right. like this

1 3 5 <<JAP 5 SPD
2 4 R

you can probably get a pranged car with a good 5 speed for $100 and remove it yourself. i've done that a few times coz it's cheaper than buying parts already removed.

or you could check pick-a-part and those kinda places. as well as ebay and the trading post.
things like that.

The Borg Warner boxes have a separate bellhousing, where the Jap has the bellhousing cast as part of the caseing.

WAIT...

$880 sounds a bit steep unless that is an outright purchase (ie: no changeover gearbox required)

I had a Starion turbo gearbox reconditioned (jap wide block but stronger internals than the Scorp/Sigma) for $600 and it was a complete rebuild.
If the gearbox is in reasonable condition it's around $300-$400.

The GE and GH Scorps have the shorter gearboxes, GJ onwards have the longer boxes.

Cheers.

yeh thats an outright purchase including the shifter plus reco i might enquire as to if they do want my auto box see if i can get it cheaper.

Does anyone know if the manual box will fit the auto yoke?

Also im having alot of trouble finding a flywheel are there any aftermarket options or is there one from another car that will fit with no modifications?
