Rear Hub Seals

Post by mullett471 »

Hi Guys,

new to the forum so hope i have post this in the right place?

my son has an '82 sigma estate (wagon) and during its last warrant of fitness it was noted in the "items requiring attentiion soon" section that the rear hub seal leaks.

the drivers side inner wheel & backing plate are heavily covered in oil/grease so i pulled the drum/backing plate & 1/2 shaft out to reveal what i think is the "hub seal"(circled in red in the picture below)

Image

can someone confirm that i am looking at the right thing & also how easy they are to remove & replace?

cheers,
Liam.

No, the oil seal is on the axle that you have removed. Its between the mounting plate (the one with the 4 holes in it) & the wheel bearing.

Its best to get a full kit, that is wheel bearing, oil seal & retaining ring. Unless you have a press, get a mechanic to do the job.

which one is it?

what is the part called that i was refering to?

do you know if the kit would come with the gaskets that fit between the axle housing/backing plate & the backing plate/mounting plate?

sorry for all the questions,i have a limited knowledge of mechanicals

I think panda's mixed up. The borgy diff has the seal between the backing plate and bearing. Yours looks like the scorp diff, which in fact has a sealed bearing and the seal on the inside. So, yes, that is the axle seal circled.
