What RWD gearbox will bolt up to a 6A12, 2L v6 DOHC engine?

Post by Superscan811 »

I just won this engine off Ebay with a blown head gasket and I am thinking about putting it in one of my scorpions.

Does anyone know for sure which RWD gearbox will bolt up to this engine?

The engine specs look great, I just hope there is an easy/cheap gearbox to match.

DOHC
Engine type — V type 6 cylinder DOHC 24 valve
Compression ratio — 10.0:1
Fuel system — ECI multi
Peak power (1994-1996) — 127–132 kW (173–179 PS; 170–177 hp) at 7000 rpm
Peak torque — 191 N·m (141 lb·ft) at 4000 rpm

Applications
1994–2002 Mitsubishi FTO
1992–96 Mitsubishi Galant/Eterna/Emeraude
1999-Present Proton Perdana
2005-Present Proton Waja Chancellor

Cheers.

Did a google search on the 6A12. Looks pretty interesting. I stumbled upon a pic of the back end of the 6A11, which I assume is the same as the 6A12.

From what I can see, you might need to get a custom bell housing made up if you can't find a suitable RWD transmission. Another option is you could mount it transversely and mod an AWD transmission to be RWD.

That info is wrong, Eclipses came with 6G72 and 6G74 V6s in the 3G onwards Eclipse. FTOs don't have 4G64s - they have 6A12's or 4G93s.

also, FTO and Galant with MIVEC engines have 8000rpm redline for manuals, 7750rpm for autos. non-MIVEC and twin turbo DOHC 24V 6A12s have 7500rpm for manuals, 7250rpm for autos. SOHC 6A12s have 7000rpm redline.

There is no factory RWD gearbox which will bolt up to 6A12, and gearbox aside - where are you going to mount engine mounts to a 6A12 block? there are no holes in suitable places on one side of the block, and on the other side of the block there's one or two you could use but still not decent enough to use for engine mounts. That's the exact reason I went with 6G72 instead of 6A12, even though the 6A12 is a far better engine.

a 6g74 3.5lt with aftermarket computer revs clean to 9000rpm
is the 6a12 a different bellhousing to 6g engines?
and if we get enough people together we could get bellhousings cast
and ill machine them up i have all the drawings(hand drawn) of both the 6g
and a w58
as for the parjero bellhousing there to long and imput shafts are a problem

I would really like to see a 6G74 rev all day long to 9k be reliable.. the four bolt bottom ends are better than the earlier two bolt engines but they still have heavy rods etc and aren't the best balanced to pull that sort of revs reliably.

The 6A12 is a totally different engine to the 6G7x - nothing is interchangable.

If people are keen to do 6G7x to Toyota W58 custom bellhousings, then put me down as a definite! The 6G7x series has just a wider scope to be made RWD as that series was made RWD so plenty of parts available to make the conversion easier.

the 6g engines arnt a problem as far as the water side pajeros and tritons
have a rwd style water pump the outlets are on both ends of the head
mine come out of back and its out of sight
other than there being only one rear wheel drive car (tritons)and there g/boxs
are worth way to much and rare as
would be an easy conversion
mines done and in a la lancer fits nice only problem is its a big heavy engine
rego is a nightmare and you can make more power out of a 4g63bt and easy
as to rego

you're not the only one to do the V6 conversion I too have a 6G72 (of the MIVEC variety) placed into an A164A Eterna GSR (the IRS jap import version of the Scorpion).

The 2500cc 6G73 DOHC and the 3000cc 6G72 DOHC wont be able to have 3.0 SOHC or 3.5 DOHC Pajero/Triton RWD water pipe to bolt onto the back of the heads without modification, as they have different jacket spacings to the 3.5 and different flange shapes than the 3.0. I'm using a 3.5 DOHC Pajero rwd water pipe with sections sliced out of it and re-welded together to shorten it.

I found the 6G72 isn't a great deal heavier than the 4G63 turbo I pulled out, perhaps 30-40kgs heavier - but when it's being placed into a 1300kg car it isn't such a big deal.

I'm in New Zealand and while we have to get the car 'certified', it probably isn't as hard to get it on the road as it would be in Australia.

I'm just saying if you're going to bother putting a V6 into something, you would be better off with a 6G72/4 as the 6A12 would be a tad more difficult to do (being there's no factory RWD stuff to use) and the biggest capacity it comes in is the 6A13 2.5L.

4G63T probably would have more potential for power (especially for their weight) - but how overdone is a 4G63T conversion? That's the number one reason I pulled the 4G63T out of mine and happily put the 6G72 lump in:

Why do you say that? I find the stock Mitsubishi water pump setups are more than sufficient. You still have to somehow route the coolant from the back of the cylinder heads forward to the thermostat housing and radiator etc - on Pajero V6s all that is built into the water pump housing.

Looks like too much trouble to do a transplant so my brother is going to get the engine and gearbox.
He knows someone up in Brisbane who has a Galant with this engine in it and wants a spare.

Thanks for all the help and info.

According to this thread, the 6A and 4G engines have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. Dude reckons he bolted his 6A to the box out of a fwd 1500 Colt, and all the bolts lined up.

I am building an automatic adaptor plate for a racer here in the states for this engine now, but I would be willing to do a manual trans too
what transmission would be popular there>? the R 154?

The engines aren't all that common over here. they only came out in a few imported vehicles.
I was hoping for an "off the shelf" solution but failing that, and because the engine doesn't put out a lot of HP, so I would look at using a wide G54B manual gearbox.

BTW: I believe there may be a market, at least in small quantities, for a narrow block to wide gearbox adapter, but using the smaller EVO flywheel/starter motor position.
The narrow block RWD 5-speed boxes are getting harder to find over here but there are plenty of the wide block RWD 5-speed boxes.

Also, in Australia, the FWD Magna used a narrow block G54B engine up until 1996.
It would then be easier to do a RWD conversion using these engines and a wide block 5-speed box.

Food for thought.

More food for thought; if you are going to use a 6A12 use the real one, lol

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/MITSUBISHI-GALAN ... 3360f93a40

But if you are going to all that trouble I would be using a 6A13TT from a 96-01 VR4. Mine had very little mods and made 170kw at all 4 wheels with no lag. Would be awesome fun with only 1000kg's to lug arounds.

I went out and got a 6G72 engine and cut it up to see what it looked like inside and out
Image
funny? when I was starting out working on cars I always thougt the engine block was a 'dumb' peice of iron, but there is a great deal to learn from cutting away the core and finding out its secrets before a build
Image
The GM auto trans plate overlaps the 6G72 v-6 bolt pattern very nicely. because I can cast my adapters, I am not dictated to by a standard adapter plate thickness size, I can adjust to any thickness I need
Image

I started to think about starter spacing and this will lend itself to the selection of flywheel size

Image
Image
then I turned my attention to the coupler design, the first thing to do was to find all the critical demensions of the exiting crankshaft
Image
I cut up the crankshaft too >;o)
Image
I laid out a couple differnt size flywheels just to see what would interfer or what had a better fitmant so I could make the best choices during the design
Image

Image
In the rough draft, the coupler is a no comprimise peice of hardware, there can be no failure at this piont, any comprimise in this unit will be made elsewhere in the design, the thickness of this unit will dicate the thickness of the adapter plate
Image
I know, it aint a computer drawing, but I spend hours just drawing and erasing and drawing thicknesses, shaving 1mm here and adding an angle there and keeping it strong and keeping it light and trying this and that , just hours of thought and frustration >;o) making a complex peice simple is what I enjoy doing

I needed to build a flex plate so I got some HSLA commercial grade 1/8 in plate and marked the center with a small starter hole, you can see the original flex plate was built from 1/16th but its shape was fairly close

Image Image
this machine is called a nibbler or pullmax style machine, it was built for making circles, but I also build my own dies for what ever purpose I want to use

Image Image
a flex plate is just that, it flex's and its also like a spring, it gets pushed forward under load, the flex plate has to move about .060 so a bit of a bend not only keeps a little of pressure against the load but when you bend steel, you double its strength without adding weight
Image Image
I opened the center hole so I could mount my adapter and then drilled it to accept the Ford C-4 torque converter and this was one of the reasons the C 4 was chosen, it has a 10.5 in bolt circle pattern, which was just small enough to fit inside the ring gear that was selected, the GM converter was 10.75 and would not fit
Image Image
I mounted the flex plate to the coupler just for the center, then I trimmed the outer diameter to size for the ring gear
Image Image
this is the finish look, I need to pay some attention to detail but I was pretty happy with it, with the smaller ( 10 in or smaller ) converter I will be mounting the starter as a reverse set up but I kept the ring gear on the flex plate so anyone could select and buy what ever stall speed converter they may want

I knew placing the starter would be the toughest part of the build, so I moved ot around many times before I decided on the placement, this is a neet little puzzle
