Jap 5spd + clutch + flywheel convertion questions.

Post by Cottees »

I currently have a 2.6L Auto GN that I want to put a Jap 5spd into. I already know that I'd need to find a narrow block version which came with a 2L Sigma or Scorpion. That is only part of the conversion. What I am asking is would the flywheel and clutch kit from the same 2L Sigma and Scorpion fit between the narrow block and a narrow jap 5spd? Also, would the flywheel and clutch kit behind a narrow 2.6L Magna also be the right size for this conversion?

Next time I go to U-Pull-It, I might have a look at the Magnas, and take some measurements. Probably wont be for a while since I spend too much while I am there. I'll be going with a second hand clutch for now, and may get a new one later. I was just thinking that a new Magna clutch kit might be easier to source, and would be handy if it fit.

Be warned, BW & Jap clutches have a slightly different spline. Jap clutch will fit on BW box, but BW clutch won't fit input shaft on Jap box. ;)

How do you tell the 2 different input shafts for the KM132? Are the Wide different from the Narrow, or is it something different? I am definitely going for a KM132, never again will I get a BW with detachable gear stick.

this is from people like cheater and reco shops mixing and matching parts
its not that common but i have been caught out once

If it helps, I have just last weekend put my 2.6 and 5 speed in my GC. I used a tn magna flywheel (had the spigot bearing machined in and also a few mm taken off the engine side of the flywheel for clearance) and a TR/TS magna clutch and pressure plate. The only issue I had with this was the locating dowels in the flywheel were a smidge to thick so I run the correct size drill bit through the pressure plate holes and away she went!!
Whole setup works a treat.

Also some KM132 narrow boxes have a smaller output shaft, so your current tail shaft may not fit. Just something else to cause you grief. ;)

I am making a trip to U-Pull-It on Sunday. If I find a car with a jap 5 spd, I'll probably get the flywheel, clutch kit, transmission and drive shaft all at the same time. At least then I have all the gear to drop out the auto, and put that one in, and I know they'll all fit together.

And don't forget the speedo cable. Thats different too on a KM132 compared to BW. ;)

Also there are about 6 different length tail shafts, so you may have to use your old shaft with a new front yoke & uni-joint

It seems Mitsubishi loved making it difficult for conversions. ;)

Bit off topic, but not quite...

My little Siggy Turbo has the Jap 5spd in it with the factory 2L donk - any idea what clutch I need to get? Or even a part number?

Must be a 2.0L Jap 5sp clutch. Both BW & 2.6L clutches are different.
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the turbo used the same clutch as the N/A models. ;)

Ok just ordered one, on the system that the shop uses, it's listed as an "MMC 5spd suit 80-82"... sounds about right to me! If not, it'll go back :)

Yep, Jap box = MMC. Hope you ordered a 2.0L, not a 2.6L as they are larger diameter.

Yeah, 2.0L :) Pick it up tomorrow. Also, will the Sigma thermostat fit into a Magna thermostat housing? The Sigma kinda needs one, but if they don't fit, I won't bother with it until I go EFI. If they do fit, I'll get one and swap it between the manifolds.

I think the thermostat in both the Sigma and the Magna are the same size. I am not 100% sure though. I know the thermostat housing from a Sigma, Magna TR/TS 2.6L and 3L are all the same size. The Difference is the pipe angle coming off the thermostat housing is different in all 3.

I have all 3 of the thermostat housings I have mentioned, I just have to get around to photographing them all to show the differences/similarities.
