4g54, 4g32 gearbox conversion

Post by fox »

im looking at putting a auto 4g54 into manual 4g32 gen 3 galant.
but i want to use the manual gearbox and clutch from the 4g32 with the 4g54 engine, is this possible? or will i need to get a new gear box/ clutch?

also is there anything else you think i should know about this conversion?

hey mate yea you should be fine with that hey, im not sure if the same box is used with the 4g32 as is with the 54 but i know that that model did come out with the 31, 32, 53 and 54 so i would assume it will all fit
this is of course as long as you have the stock narrow block 4g54, if its the wide block i think you will need a different box
i have a 75 GD galant and if i know if i was to put in a 4g54 i would have to get a jap box (5 spd) because the shear torque of a 2.6l compared to me 1.6 would shread the stock 4 spd if thrashed.
i know if i was puttin a bigger engine in i would deffo try and get a 5 speed tho.
there is a bit of discussion in this topic

there are a couple of ways...

prob easiest is check the sandwich plate on the back of the engine. If this covers up the welch plug thats at the back, then its wide, if you can feel the plug, its narrow.

if the 2.6 is a factory 5spd, then its wide.

and you can measure the distance between the gearbox locating dowels on the engine block, i think the wide measures 330mm and the narrow measures 310mm, but if thats wrong measurements, someone will correct me :D

I cant agree there buddy. I ran a 2.6 Turbo, with Nitrous, thru a galant 4spd, and the only problem i had with it, was it didnt have enough legs, it maxxed out @ 171k's (well it would have went a bit faster, but 7500 was as far as i was willing to push the stock 2.6 anyways)

well it should bolt up then :D

the 5spd would be from a 2ltr (fine to use behind the 2.6) and will have 2 holes in the top where the box bolts to the engine (like 10/15mm apart, cos the astron uses one and the saturn uses the other 1)

Depending on where the gear box comes from... lol, you may need to lengthen the shifter hole.
Cross member, you'll have to modify, do a search for a thread by GB_BB4C on the old site with the way he did it, pretty good idea!

FOX - You will need a manual flywheel to suit the 2lt you have. The Saturns use a 5 bolt flywheel, Astrons use a 6 Bolt.

any NARROW BLOCK astron flywheel should do the trick for you
how much will that cost you as it might be cheaper for you to
to get someone over here to buy one and send it for you.
And yes your clutch plate should work ,ok but you need the astron
pressure plate.
