Changing rear wheel bearings

Any special way to do it? ie pull one axle before the other or something like that? I read through the trans/drivetrain sections both here and on the old site but I couldn't find anything.
I need this info ASAP as the car has a really bad noise from the bearings along with leaky axle seals and I'm moving back to Bathurst before the end of next week, so if anyone can tell me or scan the relevant section from a workshop manual I'd really appreciate it.
The car's an '81 GJ Scorpion.

Also, I've got an '81 MA L200 that was originally a 4G32/4 speed. What would the diff ratio be, and would the centre fit the Scorpion axles and housing? Because if it's a 3.5-4.1 it'll be perfect

Again, I can't stress how fast I need the info, because I don't want to get to the hills west of Orange and have an axle walk out of the housing and bounce into one of those huge gullies :?

its a matter of pulling the axel out of the housing and
pressing the bearing of then replace the seal press the new
bearing into place and then the lock ring
but you do need a press to do this job
or an oxyset (being rough)

i cut them off with a thin angle grinder blade.

Put a deep cut into them careful not to hit the shaft then wak it with a cold chisel. This splits the collar and makes it 10 times easyer to get them off.



Works prefect every time!

errr, yeah. No offence dude, but my uncle has a press so I'd rather do it properly rather than bodge it.

you can cutt the old bearing as sugeested just make sure that you
dont get the axel

i have done it both ways, but if you have access to a Press then do it that way.

you have to be very careful when cutting it with a grinder disk,
as you can score the bearing mounting surface.

So pressing it off is the best option as it leaves the least possible damage.

And pressing a new item onto the shaft with a new seal in the diff housing is the best solution also.

You take the brakes apart, remove the disk, unbolt the 4 flange bolts.

then you may need a slide hammer to remove the axle from the diff housing. In difficult situations.

You can normaly use the brake disk with the wheel nuts left afew threads on,
to remove the axle.
(so as to stop the brake disk from leaving the axle, and use the Brake disk as a weighted hammer against the nuts to remove the axle from the tube.)


Just pull the Brake disk against the wheel nuts and use the shock to remove the axle and bearing from the housing.
Where possible.


but i have been faced with havng to cut afew off,
you need to take your time and be abit careful.

I know this may seem obvious, im not trying to be a smart ass.
Some people may need this info.

I know it's been a while but did the seals come with the bearings? Where did you buy them from?

Just get seals at your local. They are sold separately but if you have to get a kit just change bearings while you are there
