4G54 Clutch upgrade
4G54 Clutch upgrade
After my turbo conversion, I am having trouble with my 'Heavy Duty' RPM clutch not handling the power. It tends to slip in 3rd and 4th gear at about 4000 RPM and up. I am wondering if a Starion/Conquest clutch may fit, such as the one on ebay here:

Also would this later allow for an RX7 gearbox upgrade? I have a feeling that once the clutch stops slipping I will have trouble with the rest of the drivetrain.
Also I am on the hunt for the holy B2600 bellhousing. It would be excellent if someone has one in tasmania.

Re: 4G54 Clutch upgrade
When I had the boost up a notch I was also getting clutch slip in 4th going up my favourite hill. Now that I am back to standard boost ..no more issues.
I have a stock pressure plate with 30% more clamping pressure + Starion turbo clutch plate.

Re: 4G54 Clutch upgrade
Just be careful, the US Starions have 2 different sizes of clutches and pressure plates for their wide block 4G54's. I found out the hard way after purchasing 2 of them.
As for the gearbox, how much torque and where is it in the RPM range?
The Starion or Triton gearbox will be much stronger than either a BW or the Sigma/Scorp Jap 5 speed and will bolt straight on.
Depending on your budget NPC Clutches in Brisbane do a clutch/lightened flywheel package which will hold. (My brother's business makes the flywheels and their multi-plate clutches)
Here is the link to the specs.
Cheers.

Re: 4G54 Clutch upgrade
Does the Station/Triton g/box have the same ratios as the jap 5 speed in the Sigma????

Re: 4G54 Clutch upgrade
Thanks for all the suggestions!
I'd love to figure out which year US G54Bs have compatible flywheels.
I think the problem I have been having is oil leaking into the clutch from the sump. Hopefully I can get that fixed and the clutch will recover/dry out.
It's easier for me to get an RX7 box than a Triton/Starion one. I just need to find the B2600 bellhousing!

Starion and jap 5 speed have the same ratios but the staz has taper rollers on the lay shaft and wider gears to handle more torqueScorpma82 wrote:Does the Station/Triton g/box have the same ratios as the jap 5 speed in the Sigma????

Re: 4G54 Clutch upgrade
Getting closer the getting the Sigma back on the road and I remeber that last time I drove it I was playing with an EBC and the clutch was slipping up steep hills in 4th everywhere. I think I need to dive in and take the risk. With the two different type starion clutches, where is the difference? Is there a measurement I can get the seller to make? Could a little machining do away with the problem?
Re: 4G54 Clutch upgrade
I've done a little bit of research and there appear to be 2 different diameters and every other property is the same. The two diameters are
Disc Outer Diameter: 9 7/16" = 239.7125 millimeters
Disc Outer Diameter: 8 13/16" = 223.8375 millimeters
This is actually a triton 4g64 flywheel but it's the same
So to cut a long story short, this is the one!

Re: 4G54 Clutch upgrade
Seller cancelled the order about 10 days after I made it. Was expecting to be receiving the item not a refund. If he let me know sooner I would definitely be a lot less pissed than I am now.
I'm looking at this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/EXEDY-HEAVY- ... 106423872? as it is in Australia, but I'm scared I'm just going to end up with a slipping clutch all over again.

Re: 4G54 Clutch upgrade
NPC has quoted me $998 including GST for a flywheel and organic clutch. Apparently the use a 10" gtr sized clutch as the factory unit is just nowhere near large enough to work well without a button type clutch and horrible pedal feel. I think this is unfortunately a bit excessive for my budget at this point in time. (I don't think the motor even owes me that much!)
