3 speed auto bot engaging drive

Hey people's I have a 84 gk wagon my problem is when I go to drive it will not engage but it will in second then I can go up to drive and its fine I took it to the tranny man he said it was a stuck valve and would cost around $400 bones anyone had this problem? Is he having me on $? Cheers
wish i hadn't sold every car i ever owned would have some classics and some cash Datsun 1600's, XB GS Coupe, LJ and LX toranas the list goes on and so does life!

i got this problem in a LC i recently bought, i suspect the box is from a sigma or galant, and i just plan on replacing with a manual box but 300-400 sound about right me thinks
