whats the difference between jap and BW diffs?

Postby Rally_2.6LC » Tue Jul 20, 2010 6:49 pm

Hey guys i know how to tell the diffs apart (BW have bolts on back of diff, Japs have them on the front). But is there any difference in the centres?
Were there any differences in the axles? mainly number of splines on the end of them.

I have a Scorp 10bolt diff and im trying to figure out what other diff centres (not just ours, im after ford or holden etc) the axles will slide into. Im not worried about different widths of the diff as ill be chopping the centre out of it for a hybrid diff.

What i want to do is find an LSD that scorp 10 bolt axles slide in (with same number of splines) and then chop the LSD diff centre housing and part of the axle tubes from the lsd diff, do the same to the scorp diff and weld the LSD housing in place and end up with it being the same length with scorp brakes on the outside and keep the same 114.3 stud pattern.

From what I have read, you can squeeze a Starion small LSD into a Scorpion diff housing. The problem with that is they are pretty rare. I have a Starion JA open diff centre at the moment and will take some measurements when I get some time.

This is the only info i have been able to find on putting a small lsd diff into a scorp diff. As far as i know the scorp diff housing is the same as the 80's lancer RWD. I can't see it being worth it when finding one of these lsd diff centres will set you back almost a grand alone.

A diff upgrade for the scorp or sigma wouldn't be too much more than that with the added benifits of a diff where replacement parts are easier to get and better strength too.

"with the added benifits of a diff where replacement parts are easier to get and better strength too."

Hence why im looking for a newer model LSD that is easier to come by out of something like a commodore or skyline. (and yes i know you were refering to the starion diff originally)

Don't quote me on this........But I believe VR4/EVO 123 LSD's are a direct fit.
I haven't looked into this other than to chase some info up on it........

The last scorpion diff I used had a Detroit Locker installed in it...........Don't ask, It cost shitloads!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yea already researched Detroit Lockers, around $5K to build one for a Scorp Diff.
Ive heard rumours about the VR4 LSD's too. Might wait until someone kills one and needs to rebuild one and see if i can borrow it for a trial fit. The only thing I was wondering though is if they would have the same spline count/diameter on the drive shafts to our axles. I would presume they would be as they are both Mitsubishi and Jap spec cars......guess ill wait till someone kills an LSD centre for me to try.
