Ram tubes

Post by COBWBS »

Hey guys im gonna be cutting my inlet manifold apart as it was made slightly wrong.
and i was thinking about adding some ram tubes to the inside.

I tryed googling and couldn't find alot of information on the topic.

All help welcomed.

ram tubes are a way to tune the inlet lenth and have a smooth entry to your runner
on a N/A engine I use the formula of 90" / the revs you are tuning for
ie power at 6000 rev - 90/6 = 15" measured from the inlet valve to the opening of the runner including ram tube ( that is not ness completely correct but works out close and is from Phill Irvings tuning for speed ) and an easy formula to remember

as for a turbo manifold I'm guessing that would still hold true getting the pulse lenth right
will also gain even with the extra boost presure

hope that helps

Ahh yea i understand.

So do you think they are worth putting inside?
Or u jst think it would be better to make them all exacly the same?

tuning it for 6000 RPM should be heaps i rekon.

you can buy pre made ally "bell trumpets" and just weld in at the
point your runner ends and have the plenium surrounding that
keep them short as and try for a huge 11lt plus for volume (i assume
your running big boost through that massive turbo)
it will increase flow massivly
ps cheater there calculations for a third reflection intake possibly
not the best design for a turboed drag/road warrior

I dont know my guess is that the sep runners will still work the same with a large
plenum ( tricking the wave to thinking its open atmo ) that will still work like N/A
the sound wave may slow a little with the presure of boost

it would be worth trying different lenth runners on a dyno with the same boost
could be hp for nothing

mate if i can make a plenium that 11.2 lts that fits into an evo engine bay
and there is there no problems with room and could easily fit in a lancer
engine bay
and a fews rough calcs and i reckon i could fit a 17.4LT in there(not that
there is any point)but i dont see how there is any lack of room
and yes i spent a shit load of time dynoing nicks lancer(evo3 with 4g63
stroker 2.4 with everything)and the best plenium was 11.2 lt
this car run in the 8 second bracket and has 973hp at 32 pound boost.
and remember that the faster the air speed the hotter the air
ps once you have mounted your plenium int the boot then you can put
your turbo in there to like spec ops
all jokes aside prove me wrong

170 mm dia x 500 mm long plenum is 11.35 Lt

17 cm/ 2 = 8.5 so 8.5 x 8.5 x 3.1416 = 226.98 x 50 cm lenth = 11349 cc

I would have thought a 6 1/2 tube plenum would fit most eng bays

and I agree that is huge

just a thought

simply when i finish making lethals one i will post the pics ok
and remember that the jun plenium of the rb engines is 14.8lt
and you can make 1200hp its all in proporsion
if you dont think it will fit go with what you can i was just making
a suggestion as i have done a couple of these sorts of things
you can do what ever you like its your car :D
no offence taken

the one i just measured is the early style with the red writing
it was 1.9lt
which is about write for a na engine
dont know if the later models are bigger or not
but i still say that the high boost needs shorter runners and more plenium

the later ( TS on ) have longer and larger dia runners and althought the plenum is a different shape it would also be around the same size - volume - as the early
