Timing issues? Or not. Sure.

Post by mstrrab1992 »

OK so since I bought my lancer. I have had suspicions that its not running 100%. And for the life of my can't put my finger on why. From what I can tell everything is ok? It just doesn't seem to have much oomph as it should. Now I know they're not power houses. But this is what I'm experiencing.

It doesn't seem like the car has power. Vaccume advance checks out. I know the vaccume secondary actuator works cuz I can suck and hold vacuum. But the car feels powerless from about 3000 onwards. And recently following another lancer only with a single carb (mine has twins) and it pulled away by car lengths. And I have twin carbs. Something doesn't seem right.. Now I thought it has something to do with timing and I still do. Because I've advanced as far as I can. And still the car will not "ping" under load. I'm not sure what degrees btdc its running at ATM. It was set at 7 with a timing light. But I've adjusted it as far as the adjustment would let me. Which what at least 3cm. And it didn't seem to make a difference at all. Any thoughts

Should be 5 at idle
And 32 to 40 all in at around 3000 rpm
Can be checked with a digi timing light
But its more likely you have a low comp engine therefore much less go power

The owners manual I have with the car says it should be 13° btdc for twin carbs model. What should the compression be in each cylinder? Because I'll be checking all that this weekend.

So what maximum revs does it get to?
What I'm thinking here, if the vacuum diaphragm (for the secondaries) has been replaced with one from a single carb, then it wont open with the vacuum that is meant for a single carb (I've been there and tried this). The spring in the diaphragm is much lighter for a twin set up.

^Got a pic of your diaphragm?

What's your fuel pump like? Does it have good pressure?

Its got an electric facet pump so I assume the pressure is alright.

I'll get a pick of the diaphragm

The vacuum advance diaphragm was a bit stiff. It doesn't move as much as I think it should freed it up a bit more

I have 175psi in each cylinder. Just checked. Not sure what its ment to be.

I hope its not the driver or I must have to go back to drivers ed.

A problem this irritating, its probably going to be Murphy's Law and only be a 50c part that's really hard to diagnose thats causing ur dramas. Hopefully its only something cheap an easy to fix
