4g54 block

Post by Fingers »

Gday all,
I have a 4g54 question or two… I have searched the forum and I think I am more confused now than when I started.

I have acquired a GJ Scorpion that has thrown a con rod through the block.

As the car is an auto with power steering, it will be a narrow block, and have a different timing cover for the power steer pump to attach to (I think).

Being a GJ it should be an Astron I, yet it has the lump at the back of the rocker cover, does this mean it has an Astron II in it?

The main question I have is regarding a replacement. Will any narrow block Astron fit ?(or be made to fit) and which ones are the best/easiest, and which to avoid?

Thanks

As far as I'm aware, all 4G54s run the same conrods
It is a common mod to put an Astron I head on an Aatron II block to up the CR.....you may have one of these engines

I was wondering if it was the other way, someone had put a late head on an early bottom end.

GJ Sigmas still ran an Astron I, but in the Scorps they started using the Astron II in 1980 with the release of the GJ Scorp.

So it's probably factory.
Either way, the block, crank, and a couple of rods, are junk.
Can I just go and get a Magna engine from the wreckers/scrappies for a rebuild, and use the sump, timing cover, and manifolds from the Scorpion engine?

If you have a Japanese Astron I or II (eg Scorpion..Triton..Pajero) then the Magna Engine block is a totally different animal. The sump and timing cover will not fit.

Any 4g54 block that has a REMOVABLE BALANCE SHAFT COVER under the inlet manifold. That's if you are after a sump and timing case cover as well as internals.
If you want to use the block itself then it also has to match your gearbox belhousing.

All I need is a rebuildable block, with crank and rods. The rest will be either salvaged from the dead 2.6 or replaced with new parts.
