hello, i have a 1984 Mitsubishi l300, with a 1980 GH sigma 4G52 engine in it.
the problem i am having is as follows. when i start the car it turns over and starts well but then after a couple seconds stops. it does this for a while but then i found if i leave it for ten minutes and come back after a few previous tries it will last longer befor cutting out, and so on ,till it finally starts.once the car has started properly even if for a couple minutes it then runs as normall and will start as normal. the car drives well, the engine itself in great condition.
i have changed the carburetor because the other one's butterfly spring had broken and the choke was gone, so the current issue cant be due to the carby.
any help or suggestions would be brilliant thanks.

If the autochoke is disconnected or not working properly, the engine won't idle on its' own without blipping the throttle until it has warmed up.

I agree, it could well be the auto choke... it's important to pump the throttle before starting to engage it. It could also be that the auto choke isn't set up properly (fast idle adjustment), etc... it's certainly where I'd be looking first.

I've heard of this exactly before but I can't remember what the answer is!!! The owner is a bit of an odd guy. He's convinced that the trouble is actually the engine is sort of allergic to him personally!! He's fair dinkum! P'bly because it doesn't play up when the mechanic tries it - which is pretty normal unfortunately. I've been a TV service tech for many years and I know all about that issue!!
I'll put the matter in my mind's work box and see what comes up. If I remember this part, it's actually electrical. Maybe physical connections over in the battery and coil area. Rusted connections responding to physical movement re temperature or the like.
Redo, clean, all the chasssis earthing lugs around there.
