Hi crappycolt, welcome to sigma-galant.

In a word - no. The astron is a big lumbering beast and is huge compared to a sirius type engine. BUT you have got a heap of options if you are prepared to unleash your inner mad scientist on the humble Colt. Any of the FWD family of mitsubishi engine with the original configuration set up in the Colt will go in. I've played with an RC Colt and dropped a 1.8 Cyclone engine into one, and it brought it to life. There are one or 2 Colts floating around on the site - use the search function (my previous ride will be in there somewhere)

Im guessing the original 4G63 engine can/will bolt in

If so....i'd look at the Hyundai and Proton families as well as they all run Mitsubishi engines/transmissions and steering/suspensions setups

As long as it's a 4G6X from a front wheel drive it'll work. The RWD engines are wide block. If you look outside of a Mitsubishi built FWD, only early Hyundai stuff is compatible (engine on the left side of the engine bay - gearbox on the right) so your pick will be from anything manufactured mid 90's or earlier. X1 Hyundai Excels used all Mitsubishi drivetrains and front suspension/steering set ups identical to the Colt (except the Hyundais all came with front stabiliser bars unlike the Colt which only had them on GSR optioned models). You will also find that most Mitsubishis built in the same era as the Colt will have cross compatible parts (Nimbus, Cordia, Galant, Lancer)

no worrie if you just widen the whole car by about 120 mm and then it will be tight -- so in a word no it's the same size as any other astron

If you have the money and patience to go something really wacky and wild.....u can always fit a motorcycle engine and its 5/6 speed transaxle in the car.....like a Harley Davidson V-Twin or Suzuki GSX-R inline 4

I'm spending next to no cash on this bus as at the end of the day, its still a colt. Its got a bit of head work, hi-comp pistons, extractors, 32\36 ECT. Only pondering the astron as a mate has an old magna he's gunna wreck and we both thought it might be an interesting combo. I do have a t28 in the shed and that is tempting me. But so is the quad carb off a bike idea. Anyone seen this on a 1600?

I must say I have a bit of a soft spot for the humble colt - I was looking for one some years back to build as a race car
I always though they would be a pretty good jigger - nice and light with plenty of upgrade gear easy enough to fit up , I just coundn't find one at the right times

they would make an interesting upto 3 lt car in Ipra trim with 4G61T -

Yeah I thought the same cheater......I think the colt has a very similar base to a ford escort (minus the colt following)......they seem to tick all the right boxes for a budget race car

Ok, so can anybody recommend some suspension and brake components that may be worth pillaging? Wouldn't mind stiffening the chassis up a bit.

Late 80s/early 90 model magna and gallant ran interchangeable struts, hubs and brakes to a cordia (but bigger). U may find they bolt up to a colt.....that was my plan in my hyperthetical build

with Mitsubishi tending to keep a lot of there bolt up patterns the same ie rear brakes - codia/colt drum backing plate and early magna disc brake caliper mounts
front magna gear bolted straight onto both this was a great start

at the time I was thinking a 2 lt twin cam they were easy enought to find but now I would say a 4G61T and run the 2 - 3 lt class
as an Improved Production ( IPRA ) built that would run around 300 hp in a car that should build under 900 Kg
one of the advantages with the colt is that it was built before 1985 making it an early model so some flaring of the guards would be legal

so it would be easy to fit up 15 x 7 wheels with ether 225/50s or 205/50 R15 tyres where as the later lancer FWD cant flare the gaurds at all
so are lucky to get bigger than a 6" wheel

yes the colt ticks a lot of boxs for a budget car - just as the sigma did yet very few people thing out side the square and tend to stay with things that every one else does
that was lucky when my sigma did hillclimbs -- otheres ran RX7s some V8s and an assortment of other so called faster cars
yet the sigma won a lot of events in the over 2lt IP class and most didn't get it

remember one thing you dont wont to stiffen up the front to much on a FWD car if you wont it to turn - the rear can be tightened up as you wont the weight tranfer to be taken on the outside rear not the outside front

Hey just wondering how your Colt project is going? I'm in Launy too and I've got a nice straight Colt myself with a shitty motor and am starting to ponder my options as to what I'm going to do with it.

Hey another Launceston bloke! Haven't done much more to it lately. Planning a magna brake conversion in coming weeks. (thinking disk arse end too) Looking for a decent strut/spring combo for the front but not having the best luck. I cant find a set up that offer's the eye brow height in looking for. The colt's a pretty fun little car to drive with a few "tweaks" in the right area's. I bought it as a little work bus but then I found this forum and started playing around. There's heaps you can do to them and lots of parts from 80's, early 90's Mitsubishi and Hyundai. I've been on the look out fir a proton satria gti wreck to pillage.
