Wastegate / downpipe gasket

Post by Sigmaproject »

What do you turbo owners use for a gasket at this joint.

Mine has always had a exhaust leak at this location, using various homemade gaskets.

Try using copper - all but the one you are talking about is now copper - I also have to do next as my one has a leak too.

You could also add a flex pipe to add a bit of give in the system.

will up date this pic as have newer ver some where.

The last time I was trying to find a decent gasket I took the wastegate to the local exhaust shop and tried to find a close match. The muffler guy suggested flexi, but didnt have any that small.

Part of my trouble is that they dont match up 100%. and the sealing surface is very thin at the top and bottom. Only a couple of mm.

Copper sounds like a good option, and should be easy to work with.

Is the Wastegate flange steel or cast iron? If it's steel, is there any reason you couldn't build up that section by welding it?
Just a thought.

Cheers.

Yes, I know that there would be a way around it, but I am trying to fix it the easy way :?

I am planning on removing the turbo this weekend and trying a turbo with a .48 rear housing. Just to see how it goes. Bit small for 2.6 litres, but I rarely rev it past 4 grand, so it shouldnt be an issue. Hopefully pick up some early boost :D

While I have the turbo off I will remove the wastegate and try squaring up the mateing surfaces on the wastegate.

This is the reason I was chasing idea's for a gasket. :)

Is that turbologic in Pt Kembla ?

Couldnt find an exhaust or turbo shop open anywhere today. Dam long weekends, Rudd should abolish them

So my turbo changeover will have to wait.

My current mixture needle is a bit rich over 90 kmh. Unfortunately there is no more adjustment left in it, so tomorrow look like a day spent profiling another needle. Its all good fun.

PS. If you are still Carby Turbo , dont get an Air/fuel gauge. You will spend years trying to get the mixture perfect . And it will never happen :(

I think theres 3 types though

the ones i had came in a sheet of 3, hopefully they are the same, when you get them you will see what needs to be done to fit them only takes about 2 mins but they seal great
