It's a GTO I think. What do you make of the Saturn dizzy position too?
Does a Astron rocker cover fit on a Saturn?? I am not sure but wouldn't think so, Astron would be much bigger.
I thought it was a 4G35 (1700cc) but then noticed the Astron on the rocker cover???

Got me stumped.....i'm still thinking some form of import 1850cc

Yeah your right about the dizzy.....it's some fom of hybrid of Saturn and Astron

This engine could be have been made at a time when Mitsubishi/Chrysler were phasing out the Saturn and bringing in the Astron

For all we know, this particular engine is a working prototype, in a company car, feasability study...could be anything!!!

Ah, you might be onto something Chris, I have never seen a non balance shaft Astron, i just figured they were the same but that could account for the dizzy placement.

There are some weird things going on there, that's for sure.
Check the oil cap, it is central on the rocker cover and in line with the rocker cover bolts, on an Astron they are offset.
This is cottees Astron80 ( I think)

Also, check the water pump. Doesn't look Astron or Saturn as we know it. WEIRD.

It is a pre-Astron 80 Astron. As in before they put in the balance shafts. Will post pic I have of an original Astron when I get home.

This is the true astron 1 motor. They started with the 4G51 1850 then came the 4G52 2000. These came in the gc/gd style galants and gto,s. Mitsubishi then installed balance shafts and had to move the dissy to the side of the head and called these astron 80. Think this may have happened in 1980 hence the astron 80.

I would say it would depend on how old the 4G51 is. The engine in the pics was in an auction last year some time, NOS on a pallet. Think it was in Japan.

Looks like 1972-1975 is when the Astrons were made, and changed to Astron 80 in 1975.

I got lucky enough to get one in my car! However, only diffence is piston size, just bore a 4g32, unless your going for originality. I recently put a 1.6 back into mine due to some bad luck on my head, and finding a cheap 1.6 with 0 miles on it since rebuild.
