Post by yno26galant »

has anyone got this sort of power out of an astron? would rather go n/a then turbo,

what would it take?, e85? custom pleuinum? valve o/s?

I doubt it is possible and even if it was, it wouldn't be "easily" done and would require some expensive kit.

i have just around that on my shit tune with a 2.6 turbo however i would think it would be quite difficult to make that kind of power NA and would cost much more then a turbo efi setup.

I think you're not going to make the magic 200 out of an NA tuned 4G54. The thing that will hold it back is the head. Getting close to this kind out of kW output is going to take some serious coin. Individual throttle bodies, one off custom exhaust headers, fully programmable ECU, extrusion honing of the head and all the fun stuff you'd need for a full performance engine. HKS made 276 hp using their aftermarket twin cam head in their Starion race car (with carbies none the less...) but these guys are a company with a heap of R&D behind them. And if you manage to build a 4G54 engine that can manage this kind of power output, it will not be street friendly. :o

Mine was pretty worked and very quick in the Galant. I never had it tested but would have been surprised if it made more than 120kw / 160hp

I've heard stories (And I stress that I haven't had this confirmed) of a couple astrons that used to go to.drags. Both based off 2.6 siggies. Both supposedly ran quicker then 6 second and were pushing over 900hp. One was turboed (Twinned as the story goes) pushing 990hp (I'm gonna assume that's at the flywheel). The other was supposedly NA with a massive nos system. Since joining the forum I've started to doubt (even more then I already did) these stories The kind of work you'd have to do is crazy but when I heard these stories I was told Astrons can get good power. I was told deleted the balance shafts, get as much as possible lightened and balanced. As to internals, I was told to find a set of pistons and rods out of a smaller V8, takes some machining to get the rods to fit, and the bore enlarged for the pistons. The head need ported and polished (easier to use a later model head and get the same done). Not sure how much any of it would be practical to do in anything but a race motor though.

To get close to that power, you'd be looking at the kind of cash you would need to buy a brand new car with that kind of power anyway.

As to the story, I heard these about 10 years ago and even then, these cars hadn't been seen in several years. I was told the story on the Hot 4s forum and a couple other members said they knew of the cars. They also said that most of the hot Sigmas the saw were V8s. Typically running a ford motor or a holden 308.

There was a highly turbo'ed rail (much like a top fuel but no wing) some 5-10years ago running low 7's with a 2.6L....i tried tracking this car down but never managed to do it, so details on this car arre pretty much nil.

200rwkw out of a N/A 4G54 is impossible....The Honda S2000 gets 176kw out of the flywheel...and thats a twin cammed, efi donk.

Personally, 200 HP, will be far more achievable and far more user friendly.....not to mention it would be plenty of power to get u moving

200kw NA would be easy.

just build a forged engine like you would for a turbo and then add this to it.

youll get 200rwkw for a few seconds at a time :P

The rail car from QLD ran high 7's but would have been lucky to be pushing 400whp with it's set-up as the turbo was a very small frame. The same guy used to run the 2.6l swift that ran 9's they were both extremely light cars with the power you can get out of an Astron these days it would be very interesting to see a more developed set-up in one of these cars.

Cheers Mic
