Engine won't run

Post by L200expressL200 »

I pulled my 4g63 8v out of my l200 for new welsh plugs, water pump etc and now I'm having trouble with it.
It will crank and crank but not run. I double checked the timing belt. I have spark but seem to be having a fuel problem. I've replaced the fuel filter and mechanical pump but have no fuel. I can see the cam turning the fuel pump rod but have no fuel flowing.

Any opinions?

Got the fuel side sorted but still no luck. Got spark, fuel and triple checked the timing.

Where are you?
There may be members close to you and able to help.
If you have spark and fuel, it should at least fire (or back fire).

Cheers.

To confirm you have spark:
1: Remove Sparkplug 1
2: Remove and label the other leads so the engine can't start.
3: With the ignition off, turn the engine over by hand until No:1 cylinder is on the compression stroke ( seal your finger over the sparkplug hole and feel when there is a lot of pressure).
4: At approx 10° Before Top Dead Centre on the compression stroke, stop.
5: Loosen the dizzy and turn on the ignition.
6: Attach sparkplug 1 to its' lead and earth the metal part of the sparkplug.
7: While turning the dizzy back and forward you should get a spark.

If you get a spark all is good.
Re-install the sparkplug and leads.

This is also a way you can roughly set your timing without a timing light. Just stop turning the dizzy as soon as you see the spark, then tighten it up.

After confirming you have spark, to confirm you have fuel:
1: Remove the air filter and pour a tablespoon of fuel down the throat of the carby.
2: Turn over the engine and see if it starts.

It should fire (or at least backfire).

Sorry if I have over-simplified the process, but you never know who else may use this as a guide.

Cheers.

I'm not getting a spark while doing step 6 and 7 but i have spark at the plug when cranking the engine.

Most likely the timing is out.
First of all, recheck that No:1 cylinder is on the compression stroke. (with the ignition off of course)
Only turn the engine clockwise so there is tension on the timing chain. if you go past the 10° BTDC, don't just turn it back to the mark, turn the engine back half a turn then try again.

Next, note where No:1 sparkplug lead attaches to the dizzy cap.

Remove the dizzy cap and see if the rotor button is facing towards the No: 1 lead.

Fix and Re-check spark timing.

Cheers.

Thanks for the help.

It ended up being an oil pressure issue.
I hadn't primed the new oil filter so once I did that it fired and ran!
