4g54 (trition) 350k's to a tank?

hi, new here.

Just the other day i purchased an ML triton rwd for a work car, whilst i fix my golf gti (i needed a ute anyway). I did my research before i purchased it and was some what happy with the red book mileage of 12-13L/100km. To my surprise im getting nearly 20L/100km.
This just doesn't make sense to me. How can it burn that much fuel and not rich out? But there is no smell at all. It putts along beautifully albeit has a small miss that isn't spark related. It's only done 140,000km and is quite tidy besides the faded red paint that will be rectified soon. I'm putting in a 34adm very soon and removing the balance shaft when my kit arrives. Can anyone make sense of this for me?

Quite often the fuel economy figures are rather optimistic as they are recorded from a car that's strapped to a dyno.......not to mention the 20odd years of wear and tear

Even still, 20L is quite high...........I'd go through the fuel delivery system like floats, split hoses, loose hose clamps, deteriorated/leaky fuel pumps, leaky fuel tanks etc.......

If that's good, it be running a couple of tanks of high octane fuel, or even better,strap the car to a dyno and get it tuned accurately

Are you sure you are calculating this right. If you just divide Klm by litres..like you would with miles by gallons under the old system..you will be way off.
There are plenty of online calculators.

the next time you fill the tank at the fuel station.....zero in your odometer........then when you need to fill up again.....record the fuel the car took to fill the tank and record the number of km's travelled.......THEN use the fuel calculator

Fuel used in litres / distance traveled * 100. The calculator is not magic.

The tank is nearlly empty from full and ive travelled 350kms

lol ^ yep that's definitely the best way to work it out

BTW you're getting less from a tank than my GH with a pretty healthy 351, 3800 stall and 4:11 gears, engine is pulling 4000rpm at 100kmh

You should be getting at least 550 per tank (@70 litre tank). If you flog it you will get a lot less. Is the sender right in the tank, is it actually empty when it's indicating that?

Sounds pretty standard to me, my Scorp only gets 400-odd to a tank. 430-450 if I baby it :/

No one has asked this question yet ( which I think is the most obvious one).....

What are your driving conditions?????
Arevu on the hwy mostly or suburbs driving?
Are u aggressive with the accelerator or are you smooth/casual driver?
You said ur in a Triton...are you towing and/or carrying heavy loads?????

All these factors will have a massive impact on your fuel economy

One last question,

Is this ute modified at all (including lpg conversion) or is it stock as a rock?


If its stock, I'd simply go through the entire fuel, spark and ignition systems to make sure everything is up to scratch.
Replacing the fuel filter, air filter, dizzy cap and rotor button, spark leads and plugs and adjusting the carby back to OEM specs (via the Gregory's) as well as a quick clean from any carbon build up will do wonders to ur fuel economy.
