Engine Numbers

Post by SDEXPRESS »

Hi guys, great forum… endless amounts of good, local info…

Got a quick one for you…

Im building a 1984 L300 Van… Im using a 2.6 Auto Scorpion block with an Astron 11 top end (TR Magna)

I have two blocks here… Number One M531******* I know this is a 2.6L Auto

The second block is 4G64 followed by EF2*** - I bought it off a guy who claims it was from an 84 Auto Scorpion

Can someone confirm for me that the second block is what it is claimed to be??

Thanks again for your help legends

if that engine number prefix is correct, its a 2.4 litre Sirius engine. Sigmas, Scorpions and Magnas all used either 4G52 (2litre) or 4G54 (2.6 litre) astron engines (Tritons also use the Astron 2.6 litre engine). The Sirius engine is a belt driven engine while the Astron is chain driven (there are really obvious differences between the 2). Parts aren't cross compatible between these engines.

Hey geezer, Thanks for the reply… I gave you the wrong prefix, sorry!! It's 4g54 followed by EF2***

I did some reading today and its seems like engines stamped with two lines of numbers are imports : 4G54
EF2***

Engines assembled here in OZ are one row: M531*******

My next question is: I pulled the head of both motors today. The OZ built engine had dished pistons as I expected but the import, an 84 Scorpion had flat tops… I thought flat tops were only bought out from 85??

Anyone help out on this?? Is it most likely that its been re-built at some stage and had flat tops put in?

Cheers everyone

all the info you want is scattered through the forum dude. try the identifying astron heads section in the engine section. all astron 1 came out with dished pistons 1977ish till 1980ish. then astron 2 came out with flat tops 1981 till the death of 4g54 magna 1994ish (citation needed) wiki can help here too, they have a decent astron series page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_Astron_engine

Seeing as we're talking about engine numbers...

What about g32's?

Is there any way at all I can tell if my engine is from my body? (Matching numbers)

Nothing in the 4G3x engine numbers tells you anything about model/year/origin/spec as far as I know, and the chassis number/VIN only tells you what size engine it originally had - doesn't list the engine number.

("Matching numbers" is meaningless anyway, other than for rare/limited edition models of cars to help determine whether they are genuine or copies. I can't think of anything in the Galant range that would fall into that category !)

Yea I know it's meaningless now... But 20, 30 years. See what happens then. Also, just for my own curiosity that's all :)
