318 V8 into LC lancer??

Post by 79_lancer »

Hi ! was just wondering how many people have or have attempted to put a v8 into a lancer. Also if you can get it engineered for road use (SA) and what has to be done to do so. i know it can be done because ive seen one, but it was only used for burnouts. Cheers,
Dave

What's the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA NSW) called in SA?
Google motor coversion or modification laws there.

That's how I found out about the laws in NSW.
In NSW cars under 1000kg's are limted to a formula for engine capacity to weight.
Galant's are limited to 2700cc's N/A and 2300cc's Turbo'd

You will need to speak to an engineer about registration, but to give you an idea have a read through this.

The Toyota V8 is VERY wide due to the DOHC heads, they're a tight fit in a Sigma so there's no way you'd get one in a Lancer without major hackage.

Save your money and look at something designed after WWII.
For the same cash you could efi and turbo an Astron and make as much power, legally.

I put a Holden 308 with a supra 5 speed onto a cut down triton diff in an la 2 door (hence the user name) I remember I had issues with steering I had to make a custom sump. Had to make custom extractors and ran a twin 2 1/2 inch system. Had a set of 14x7 meals wheels. Went like stink in a straight line steered like a pig sounded great always had smile on my face! To behonest the car would have been a lot better with a vr4 or EVO set up at least it would have steered. The 318 would be similar but I think you would have to modify too much metalwork in the car but good luck if you want to have a go!

Dunno if this has benn mentioned before...if so...I'll say it anyway :P

It would be worth doing a bit of a ring around with the big name guys like:

John Taverna chassis
Castlemaine Rod Shop

These guys build/setup/customise these sort of applications for racing all the time.

Most of these guys have V8 conversion kits sitting on the shelf ready to be purchased for cars like
Torana
Premier
Capri
Cortina
Escort
Datsuns
Sigma/Scorpions
etc etc etc etc

And these engine are usually bigger in cu.in sitting in smaller engine bays...most of them street legal....im sure slotting in a 5.2L in a Lancer shouldn't really be that more difficult than usual

The biggest problem u'll have (im guessing) is knowledge (as it's a rare combination) and cost

My 2c anyway

I can tell you where you biggest problem will be !
The pissy narrow gearbox tunnel !

My project back in 1991 was to do a 340 into my LC Lancer for the show circuit ..... only problem was marriage, a new house and money got in the way.

The 340 small block was about "as good as it gets" with "all the gear" ... W2 heads etc.....

Just about anything can be Engineered with time and money !

22 years later - she is almost reborn as an injected SR20 ... yes I know it's a Nissan :)

I'm thinking a 318/340 or 360 is gunna be a&&%$*&( tight fit in a street legal car, I'm at the pointy end of a 3.9 V6 {318 minus 2 cyls} dodge Dakota it's been a tight fit to make everything fit and work but it gunna be worth it once it's done :D Sorry cant post picks, can email them if anyone else want to post them??

hey Dave,...if you send me pics i'll put them up,...
Oh by the way this install is awesome, I bypassed a "Blown Hemi" install in a duster to check out the engineering work on the Lancer....... (H)
