number stamped into firewall

Post by Rally_2.6LC »

Hey guys I was looking at my lb and lc the other day and saw a number stamped on the firewall and was wondering what the number relates to?
Is it trim or option codes?
It is the number which starts A73-*******
I know what the A73 means but not the following numbers.

I can't find it anywhere on my paperwork and was a bit confused.
Any help appreciated :)

Cheers

That is usually the actual body number (before vin numbers came in) The trim codes and other stuff should be on a plate on the firewall on another plate separate from the compliance plate. It should be the number on your rego paperwork, that and the engine number

Its the build number
some of the digits will appear on you vin
tag
it to tell whether it been rebodied
the same number should be stamped into

Thanks guys,
Though none of the numbers stamped into the firewall line up with any of the VIN numbers for their respective each car.....weird.

Sounds like someone has put the compliance and other plates onto that shell? (rebodied)

On 3 different cars coming from 3 different places....exceptionally doubtful.
I do have the full history of the car that I own (known previous 3 owners) and it has definitely not been rebodied.

As the factory workshop manual says in the Vehicle Identification Section:
The chassis number is stamped at the central part of the toe board inside e engine compartment
it also says:
A7 = the car line (Lancer Hatchback), the 3 the engine size (1600cc), the next 2 numbers are the model code ( 15 = model NXR8 -the 5 speed manual, 25= KXR8 the auto trans model) and the next five number are the sequence or serial number that runs fro 00000 to (in theory) 99999. This is also the chassis number. It is different from the vehicle ID number on the shiny aluminium plate. In that case the code is as follows:

A7 Lancer, Celeste station wagon or hatchback.
Engine Size: 2= 1400, 3=1600 5=1200 (or 2600 in North America) 8= 2000
Body Type: M= Hatchback V= Station Wagon
Transmission Type: N= 5 speed Manual, K = Automatic, None or blank = 4 speed manual
Trim Code: X= GL G=GT G= GSR J=Standard
Steering Wheel Code: R= RHD L=LHD
Export Destination: 6=Europe, 8= Australia Blank is General Export (Other)
