Help with Chassis number

Post by lancersr20 »

Hi,

I've got a bit of a problem with reading the "font" on my chasis number plate.
I need this for insurance ... and of course VicRoads won't give me that information (hasn't been registered for a long time)

It typically reads A73-1721840 ..... but the problem I'm having is reading the "4" .... or is it a "9"

Could someone show me (send me a pic) of what a "9" and/or a "4" looks like on your chassis plate (which is the one on the "fire wall" behind the engine) ?

Thanks Mark,

Can anyone advise the difference between the following ? :

1. Number stamped on strut tower ... eg. LC72536KL3741234 (not my actual number) - this appears on the aluminium build plate !
2. Number stamped into firewall ...... eg. A73-3121234 (not my actual number)

The A73 is the one I'm having trouble reading between a 4 and a 9 because of the "fancy font" they have used

The longer number (on the build plate) is the full VIN .... which is the important one for rego etc purposes

The shorter number is just the body / chassis serial number.

The last 6 or so digits at the end should be the same in both cases (unless it there is something dodgy gone on in it's past !)

Thanks Dave,

Ok, The build plate and the "strut" number match ...... but I "beg to differ" that the body/chassis serial numbers match the build plate ! (nothing even close to similar)

neither mine or Mark's match

Can you check yours for me ?

They do on mine .... but it's a Galant, not a Lancer.

If you have access to a workshop manual, they usually explain what all the numbers mean.

For rego purposes, the A73-xxxxx number shouldn't make any difference anyway. VicRoads work on the VIN.

Thanks Dave,

Yes, I would normally agree with you with my experience with "Holden's" .... but doesn't seem the case with mine at least !

I guess my query about the 4 and 9 is becoming irrelivant now - as it is not the number I will give to VicRoads or my Insurance company

Just a thought ......

If the bodyshells for the LC were imported from Japan and the cars assembled here, then they may well have Japanese body numbers (A73-xxxx would be consistent with that, designating a 1600cc Lancer) ? ..... which would be over-ridden by the LC-xxxxxx number stamped on them here, indicating an Australian-built car

I beleive that they were "fully imported" .... but wouldn't stake my life on it !

If they were imported the chassis number and VIN will be different. The chassis number stamped on the firewall was done in Japan and the VIN plate will be in numerical sequence with the Australian production.
