I hear timing Chain rattle when the engine oil is hot and at idle speed.
Otherwise the engine goes really well and the noise is only at idle after driving.
No oil burning but a bit of rear main leakage.
Do I need to worry about this noise?

Have you tried adjusting the tensioner? Behind little diamond shaped plate on front of timing chain cover.

That tensioner behind the plate is for the counterbalance shaft chain but most likely not the culprit.
You need a new timing chain..
They are east to replace and relatively cheap.

Thanks everyone...I'll look into a new chain..but meantime will put up with the rattle at idle.

Dunno if this is a common way to replace chain or not...
I used to find the joining link on the chain, join the new chain to the old chain and rotate the engine with your fingers holding the chains on the teeth of the cog until joining link is back at the top. Then remove the old chain from link and join new one up. Easy way to replace chain without removing timing cover.
Is that a good idea? Or does everyone do it that way.

Thats how my old man used to do it, if you are careful not to slip a tooth it can make it a 5 minute job.

I also stuff rags around the chain before removing the link, just in-case some of the pieces fall while removing it.

its dodgy practices like that which give the astrons a bad rep and will come back to haunt you in the long term!
that doesnt replace the guides or the TENSIONER which wear through the teflon and into the metal.
it also doesnt replace the oil pump/ balance chain and guides. which in most of the cases ive seen is responsible for the constant whirring sound and the destruction of the engine when it snaps, which is more likely than the cam chain
Do it properly and replace the lot. its not hard in a rwd car, but is a pain in the ass
